Spread analysis
Texas will try to bounce back from an ugly road loss to Oklahoma State on Saturday which snapped a six-game winning streak. The Longhorns are now 12-3 SU but just 5-10 ATS this season and remain in the AP Top 25, holding down the No. 21 spot.
Oklahoma sits just outside the rankings but has an identical 12-3 record while going 10-5 ATS. The Sooners are fresh off a 79-66 win over Iowa State to rebound from a 10-point road loss versus No. 1 ranked Baylor. Oklahoma has a solid team on both ends of the floor, ranking 37th in the country in both adjusted offensive and adjusted defensive efficiency according to KenPom.
The Sooners have gotten big contributions from a pair of transfers in Jordan Goldwire who leads the team with 4.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game, and last year's Big Sky Player of the Year Tanner Groves who averages 14.3 ppg on 59.1% shooting.
The Longhorns have shined on the defensive end of the floor, ranking 11th in adjusted defensive efficiency, but they don't put up many points. Senior forward Timmy Smith is the only Texas player scoring in double-digits, leading the team with 11.9 points per game, and the Longhorns are coming off a pitiful performance where they put up just 51 points on 39% shooting.
With such a low-scoring offense it'll be tough for Texas to outscore Oklahoma enough to cover this spread. Especially with the Sooners shooting a sizzling 51.2% from the floor, the second-best mark in the country. Take the Sooners with the points.
Prediction: Oklahoma +6.5 (-110)
Over/Under analysis
When head coach Chris Beard joined Texas this season he brought over the defense-first philosophy and methodical offense he employed in five seasons at Texas Tech.
This Longhorns team is very tough on the defensive end of the floor and that's enhanced by the pedestrian pace they play at with Texas ranking 354th in adjusted tempo.
The Sooners shoot the ball very well but they don't push the pace either, ranking 243rd in adjusted tempo. They also have a tendency to be sloppy with the ball and don't do a good job of getting to the line.
The total is set at a very low 127 but with the Longhorns going 6-2 O/U in their last eight games we're still leaning towards the Under.
Prediction: Under 127 (-110)
Best bet
We mentioned how sluggish this Texas offense is in our Over/Under analysis and that lends even more weight to our ATS lean. With fewer possessions, it will be tougher for the Longhorns to outscore the Sooners by seven points.
The trends also support this narrative with the Longhorns 6-20 ATS in their last 26 home games against teams with a road winning percentage of greater than .600. Meanwhile, the Sooners are a commanding 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games when catching points.
It's also worth noting that this rivalry matchup has seen the road team cover in seven straight while the underdog is 16-5 ATS in the last 21 meetings. We're putting our money on the road dogs.
Pick: Oklahoma +6.5 (-110)
