Are you having withdrawal symptoms after a fabulous weekend of March Madness action? Not to worry — the College Basketball Crown fills the void as the Georgetown Hoyas tip off against the Washington State Cougars in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Crown is a new postseason event featuring 16 teams, primarily from the Big Ten, Big 12, and Big East. It allows players to earn name, image, and likeness money while competing a few more times on the hardcourt.
See why I’m riding with the Hoyas with my Georgetown vs. Washington State predictions and college basketball picks for Monday, March 31.
Who will win Washington State vs Georgetown?
The Georgetown Hoyas will survive and advance. Stay tuned to find out why.
Washington State vs Georgetown prediction
My best bet: Georgetown -3.5 (-110 at bet365)
The first thing you should look at when handicapping the College Basketball Crown is the transfer portal. The current state of college sports allows the transfer portal to be open while teams are still finishing their season, meaning some players and teams are focused on the next season while others are looking to finish strong.
The Washington State Cougars have three names in the portal: Nate Calmese, Isaiah Watts, and Marcus Wilson. Calmese leads the team in scoring (15.2 ppg) and assists per game (4.4), Watts is a double-digit scorer (11.0 ppg) as a starting guard who excels at perimeter defense, and Wilson only appeared in four games as a true freshman. Still, he was expected to fill the void with the departure of two teammates ahead of him on the depth chart.
The Georgetown Hoyas are also shorthanded with center Drew Fielder (7.1 points, 5.4 rebounds per game) in the portal, and Thomas Sorber (NBA Draft, injury) is likely out. Sorber hasn’t played since February 15 and is a big absence considering he averaged 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
I think Wazzu’s absences will loom larger in this contest as the Cougars have no guards with meaningful experience. The only available player standing under 6-foot-7 who played meaningful minutes is Tomas Thrastarson, a freshman from Iceland with nearly as many turnovers (16) as assists (17).
Parker Gerrits and Kase Wynott saw the court in a combined 54 games, but they averaged just 2.8 points and are more question marks than anything. Forward LeJuan Watts can do it all and will likely be tasked with greater responsibility on the ball, but he also leads the team in turnovers per game (3.3). It’ll be difficult to execute coach David Riley’s pace-and-space team with a severe dearth of ballhandlers.
Wazzu already had notable weaknesses on the defensive boards (311th in defensive rebounding percentage at 69.2%) and the defensive end in general (276th in adjusted efficiency since February 17, per BartTorvik). With the offense now in flux and lacking guard play against a decent Hoyas defense (56th in adjusted efficiency), I have to lay the points with the favorite.
Washington State vs Georgetown same-game parlay (SGP)
I’m betting on Wazzu’s no-guard lineup experiencing turbulence in the first half and onward. The Cougars usually trend to the Over (18-15 O/U), but that’s all thrown into question given the current state of the roster.
It’s difficult to stomach playing an Under in a Wazzu game given how bad the defense has been over the last month and a half. Still, Georgetown is far from a world-beater offensively (143rd in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency) and prefers to make its mark on the defensive end.
Neither team has played particularly well on the road — Georgetown ranks 273rd in Haslametric’s Away From Home Metric while Wazzu isn’t far ahead at 232nd. The Hoyas will benefit from having more time to adjust to Sorber’s absence and Fielder being more of a paint presence, whereas the Cougars could be thrown off their game early given the strange state of the roster.
