My analysis
Both of these teams have struggled to cover spreads lately, but I have less faith in the Wichita State Shockers — who are just 1-4 in conference play.
Since the start of December, the Shockers have lost by double digits to UTSA, South Florida, Kansas City, and DePaul, who all sit outside the Top 120 of the KenPom ratings. Now they face a Memphis Tigers program that has won five of their last six contests.
Wichita State is not a team that can slow things down, which makes Memphis an especially tough matchup. The Shockers are 57th in the country in adjusted tempo and will struggle to defend a fast-paced Memphis squad that ranks 25th in the country in transition frequency.
The Tigers are also eighth in the country in 3-point percentage (39.3%), while the Shockers are 231st in opponent 3-point percentage (34.8%). Memphis also does a great job of getting to the line (19th in free throw rate), and teams tend to get more calls going their way at home.
On the other end of the floor, Wichita State is just 210th in effective field goal percentage (50%), while Memphis has held four of five AAC foes to 70 points or fewer.
The biggest weaknesses of this Memphis side are a high turnover rate and poor effort on the defensive glass. However, the Shockers are 206th in offensive rebounding rate, while also sitting outside the Top 300 in opponent turnover rate.
Everything about this matchup suggests that the Tigers should roll at home.
