NFL odds Week 4: sharp money & line movement

NFL Week 3 is in the books, NFL Week 4 odds are on the betting board, and a few games are already getting action. Among the noteworthy matchups are a couple of AFC clashes: the New England Patriots visit the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Las Vegas Raiders host the unbeaten Buffalo Bills.

Broncos at Jets odds

Opening line

Jets +2.5, Over/Under 40

Why the line moved

UPDATE 7:45 P.M. ET THURSDAY: BetMGM Nevada is seeing very light action on this game, despite a lot of line movement. The Broncos opened -2.5 and hit -3 early in the week, but the line flipped to Jets -1.5 by Wednesday. With kickoff looming, the number flipped back to Denver -1 and is now at pick. "It's not much of a decision at all," BetMGM Nevada's Jeff Stoneback said. "It's two-way action, but not much action. We've got about $3,000 more on the Jets on the spread, and 20 more tickets on the Broncos." The total opened at 40, moved to 39.5, then crept up to 41.5 before settling at 41. "We need the Over for a little bit, which shows you how unusual this game is," Stoneback said, noting in standalone games, books generally have a significant need for the Under. "We've got a bigger decision on the total than on the side, but it's still not a big decision."

UPDATE 6:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: Denver opened -2.5 and got to -3 early at FanDuel, but the line then jumped the fence to New York -1.5 Wednesday, before flipping once more to Denver -1 this evening. The Broncos are attracting 71 percent of spread bets and 67 percent of money. The total bounced around a bit too, from 41 to 39.5 to 41.5, and it's two-way action with a lean to the Under, which is drawing 56 percent of tickets and 52 percent of dollars.

UPDATE 4:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: The SuperBook opened the Broncos -2.5, and it's now Jets -1. "We've taken sharp action on the Jets at +2.5 all the way to -1," SuperBook manager and oddsmaker Eric Osterman said. "The sharp money moved the line, but we're getting a lot of public support on the Broncos. The majority of the liability is on the Broncos, because of parlays." The total is up a point to 41 at The SuperBook. "We've seen some public money on the Over. If the Jets win and the game goes Under, it'll be a good outcome for us," Osterman said.

UPDATE 2 P.M. ET THURSDAY: BetMGM opened the Broncos -3.5, and between betting and the news that Denver would start third-string QB Brett Rypien, the line jumped the fence to Jets -1.5. "The Jets are the off-the-map biggest line move this NFL season," BetMGM vice president of trading Jason Scott said of the 5-point swing this week. "Good luck to those betting the Jets. They've definitely got courage." That said, this game is actually getting two-way play overall: Denver is drawing 69 percent of point-spread tickets, but the money is split almost perfect 50/50. The total opened 40, went to 41 and is now 40.5, with 52 percent of bets on the Under, but 72 percent of money on the Over.

UPDATE 11 P.M. ET TUESDAY: With starting quarterback Drew Lock (shoulder) likely out another two games, the Broncos announced Tuesday that third-string QB Brett Rypien would start Thursday night at the Jets, rather than second-string QB Jeff Driskel. Reaction was swift at The SuperBook, which over the course of a couple of hours Tuesday afternoon moved the line from Denver -3 to pick. "The drop is from the third-string QB being the probable starter," SuperBook oddsmaker Cameron Coombs said. "This game should be very interesting. Two teams that look to be tanking, going head-to-head."

Denver very likely won't have QB Drew Lock, and definitely won't have standout wideout Courtland Sutton and star linebacker Von Miller, both lost for the season. Yet the Broncos opened -2.5 at The SuperBook, which says a lot about the Jets in this battle of winless teams. There was no line movement Sunday night.

Colts at Bears odds

Opening line

Bears +2.5, Over/Under TBA

Why the line moved

UPDATE 3:55 P.M. ET SUNDAY: Indianapolis moved from -2.5 to -3.5 at PointsBet USA, with ticket count dead even and 60 percent of the money on the Colts.

UPDATE 9:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: The Colts ticked from -2.5 to -3 Sunday morning at BetMGM in Nevada. "Tickets within a few, money too. Not a big decision," BetMGM's Scott Shelton said.

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: At FanDuel, the line has toggled between Colts -2.5 and -3 this week, currently sitting at -2.5. So it makes sense that this matchup is seeing two-way action thus far, with a 50/50 split of point-spread tickets and 57 percent of money on the road favorite Indianapolis. The total dropped from 44.5 to 43, despite 74 percent of bets and 99 percent of dollars on the Over thus far.

The Bears are 3-0 SU (2-1 ATS), but SuperBook oddsmakers were more impressed with the 2-1 SU and ATS Colts. And apparently, early bettors were, too, as this line moved to Colts -3 Sunday night.

Saints at Lions odds

Opening line

Lions +5.5, Over/Under 54.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 12:40 P.M. ET SUNDAY: The Saints are down to -3 at BetMGM in Nevada, but Jeff Stoneback said the book needs the Lions. "Money is 3/1 Saints and tickets 4/1, and there's a lot of parlay liability on the Saints." Sharp play brought Detroit down from +4.5 to +3.

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: The Saints opened -5.5 at The SuperBook before last Sunday's home loss to Green Bay, then reopened -4 Monday morning and are now -3. "We have sharp money on the Lions, but huge parlay money coming in on the Saints, both spread and moneyline. It's reverse line move and Pros vs. Joes," SuperBook manager and oddsmaker Eric Osterman said.

UPDATE 9 A.M. ET SUNDAY: There was a retest of the Saints player whose COVID test came back positive late Saturday night. That retest was negative, and it's game on today, with the Saints down to a 3-point favorite.

UPDATE 12:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: Late Saturday night, news broke that one Saints player tested positive for COVID after the team arrived in Detroit for Sunday's game. There's no word yet on the status of the game, but BetMGM Nevada's Scott Shelton said it is currently off the board. Likewise, the game is off the board at William Hill US, PointsBet USA and Circa Sports. It was still on the board at a few books, with the Saints down to -3.

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: FanDuel opened the Saints -5.5, then moved to -4 after New Orleans' home loss to Green Bay on Sunday night. The Saints then spent a couple of days at -4.5 before returning to -4 Wednesday. Early action is all Saints, who are grabbing 87 percent of tickets/86 percent of money.

UPDATE 11 P.M. ET TUESDAY: Casual observers might've expected this line to move in the Saints' direction, off a dead number. The opposite, however, is the case at The SuperBook, where it's now Lions +4. "The move is due to how both teams played last week," Coombs said, alluding to the Saints' home loss to the Packers and the Lions' road win over the Cardinals. "The Lions are finally getting healthy, and their offense looked pretty lethal. On the other hand, the Saints have been struggling."

There was no line movement Sunday night at The SuperBook before this game came off the board at kickoff of the Packers-Saints contest. Saints-Lions will go back up Monday morning.

Cardinals at Panthers odds

Opening line

Panthers +4.5, Over/Under 52.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 12:40 P.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada's Jeff Stoneback said that along with the two sizable six-figure plays on the Cardinals, the public is on the Cardinals, too. "Obviously, it's a very large decision," Stoneback said. Point-spread money is running a whopping 21/1 on Arizona, largely due to those $530,000 across two bets, but ticket count is also all Arizona, at 6/1.

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: In what is otherwise a humdrum game, two massive bets have BetMGM Nevada with huge liability: a $300,000 midweek play on Cardinals -3.5, and a late Saturday night bet of $230,000 on Cardinals -3 (-115). "Monster decision," BetMGM Nevada's Scott Shelton said. "It wouldn't be a popular game whatsoever, other than those bets."

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: The Cardinals opened -5 at FanDuel, but they've spent most of the week at -3.5, in the wake of an upset home loss to the Lions. Still, Arizona is attracting 93 percent of tickets/90 percent of money on the spread. 

After the Cardinals' unexpected home loss to the Lions and the Panthers' surprising road upset of the Chargers, early bettors seemed to think 4.5 points was too many for visiting Arizona in Week 4. This line dipped to Cardinals -3.5 Sunday night at The SuperBook.

Jaguars at Bengals odds

Opening line

Bengals -3, Over/Under 48

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: The Bengals have dropped from -3 to -1.5 over the past 36 hours at FanDuel. It's two-way action, though, with Cincinnati taking 54 percent of tickets and money on the spread. The total is at 49.5, with 62 percent of bets and 73 percent of money on the Over.

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: Cincinnati opened -2.5 at FanDuel and quickly went to -3 Sunday night, with no line movement since then. Early spread action is on the road underdog, with Jacksonville garnering 60 percent of tickets and 67 percent of money. The total quickly went from 46.5 to 44.5 Sunday night, but then shot to 49.5 by Tuesday, where it remains. The Over is drawing 78 percent of tickets/84 percent of money.

Jacksonville looked awful in a 31-13 Thursday night home loss to Miami, while Joe Burrow and the Bengals scratched out a 23-23 tie as 5.5-point underdogs at Philadelphia. So The SuperBook gave the Bengals a 3-point nod, and there was no line movement Sunday night.

Browns at Cowboys odds

Opening line

Cowboys -4.5, Over/Under 56

Why the line moved

UPDATE 12:40 P.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada's Jeff Stoneback said although Dallas is down to -3.5, the book needs the Browns today. "It's 5/1 money and 4/1 tickets on the Cowboys, and Dallas is getting the third-most parlay tickets of any team today."

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: "Good two-way betting on the spread, with more sharp money on the Browns," SuperBook oddsmaker Eric Osterman said. "The majority of the parlays are on the Cowboys, but it's nothing huge. We do have a lot of parlays on the Over." That said, the total has been pretty steady at 56.

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: The Cowboys moved from -5 to -4.5 at FanDuel, but it's all Dallas betting so far, with 84 percent of tickets and 82 percent of cash.

Cleveland (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) has a better record than Dallas (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS), but Cleveland's two wins were at home over Cincinnati and Washington, while Dallas' two losses were on the road against the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks. The SuperBook opened at Cowboys -4.5 and moved to -5 Sunday night.

Vikings at Texans odds

Opening line

Texans -4, Over/Under 53.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: The Texans moved from -3.5 to -4.5, then back to -3.5 at BetMGM in Nevada. "These are the two most disappointing teams, although the Texans' schedule has been brutal," BetMGM's Scott Shelton said. "Very lightly bet game, money really close, tickets 2/1 on the Texans."

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: Houston opened -4, peaked at -4.5 and is now -3.5 at FanDuel, but early tickets and money are running 2/1 on the Texans.

UPDATE 11 P.M. ET TUESDAY: Houston dialed back a tick to -3.5 Monday morning at The SuperBook, but this game is now off the board due to the Titans' COVID situation. The Vikings hosted the Titans in Week 3. "We're waiting until we have concrete information," Coombs said. "We want to be sure of the situation before we put up a line."

In a battle of winless teams, The SuperBook opened Houston -4 against Minnesota, and there was no line movement Sunday night.

"Talk about a must-win spot for the Texans. They’ll be desperate after falling to 0-3 on Sunday. They’ve played a brutal schedule," Murray said Sunday night, noting Houston's first three weeks were at Kansas City, vs. Baltimore and at Pittsburgh. "The Vikings finally showed some life today. I still don’t really know what to make of them."

Minnesota lost to Tennessee 31-30 Sunday, giving up a late field goal.

Seahawks at Dolphins odds

Opening line

Dolphins +7, Over/Under 54.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 12:40 P.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada has a whopping $500,000 play on Seahawks -6.5, but that bettor didn't get the best of the number, as Seattle is now down to -4.5. The Dolphins are getting sharp money, "but the public is all over Seattle," BetMGM's Jeff Stoneback said.

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: The SuperBook is down to Seahawks -5.5. "We have sharp money on the Dolphins spread, but it's being overwhelmed by the Seahawks money," Osterman said. "Reverse line move and Pros vs. Joes on this game also. We're also getting a lot of parlay money on the Over." The total moved from 54.5 to 56.

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: This line was pinned at Seahawks -6.5 at FanDuel until Thursday afternoon, when it ticked to -6. But this game is among the most lopsided on the Week 4 docket, with Seattle attracting 93 percent of tickets and money on the spread.

Seattle is 3-0 SU and ATS, putting both those marks on the line in a cross-country trek in Week 4. The SuperBook didn't move Sunday night off the opener of Seahawks -7.

Chargers at Buccaneers odds

Opening line

Buccaneers -6.5, Over/Under 45

Why the line moved

UPDATE 12:40 P.M. ET SUNDAY: "It's 4/1 money and 3/1 tickets on the Bucs, and the parlays, moneyline parlays and teasers are all to the Bucs," BetMGM Nevada's Jeff Stoneback said. Tampa Bay is up to -7.5.

UPDATE 11 P.M. ET SATURDAY: Tampa Bay opened -6.5 at The SuperBook and is currently -7. "The line briefly went to -7.5, and we got some sharp money on the Chargers at +7.5. But other than that, it's been all Bucs money," SuperBook manager and oddsmaker Eric Osterman said. "This game looks like it will be our biggest decision of the early games."

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: Tampa Bay spent all week at -7.5 before dipping to -7 Thursday morning at FanDuel. Still, tickets and money are running about 2/1 on Tom Brady and the Bucs.

Tom Brady and Tampa Bay (2-1 SU and ATS) won and cashed their last two, and after the Chargers laid an egg against the Panthers, early bettors apparently put some early dollars on the Buccaneers. The SuperBook opened Tampa -6.5 and moved to -7 Sunday night.

Steelers at Titans odds

Opening line

Titans -1.5, Over/Under 47

Why the line moved

UPDATE 4 P.M. THURSDAY: Earlier today, the NFL announced this game will not be played in Week 4, due to the positive COVID tests of five Titans players and six staff members. However, at The SuperBook at Westgate, manager and oddsmaker Eric Osterman said any bets made prior to this game coming off the board Tuesday are still live bets. "The rule on our betting sheet says that (this season's) games must be played by August 1, 2021. So if the game is played before then, it's action." It likely won't be a long wait, as the NFL is working to juggle bye weeks and reschedule the game as soon as possible.

UPDATE 11 P.M. ET TUESDAY: This game jumped the fence Monday to Steelers -1.5, then went to -2.5 early Tuesday on news that the Titans had a developing COVID situation. Minutes later, the game came off the board altogether, on news that three players and five personnel members tested positive.

Tennessee opened -1.5 at The SuperBook, and there was no line movement Sunday night.

"Both teams come in to this matchup at 3-0," Murray said. "The Steelers have been impressive, while the Titans seem to just barely squeak by every week. I'm thinking the public will look to back Pittsburgh here."

Ravens at Washington odds

Opening line

Washington +13.5, Over/Under 52

Why the line moved

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: BetMGM Nevada took a $100,000 bet on Ravens -12.5 midweek, and Baltimore is at -14.5 this morning. "Ticket count is 6/1 and money is 3/1 on the Ravens," BetMGM's Scott Shelton said. "Moneyline parlays and teasers are the thing in this game. The Ravens are on all of them."

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: The Ravens are up to -14 after opening -13 at FanDuel, and the betting splits validate the move, with Baltimore getting 85 percent of bets and 91 percent of money. The total dropped from 47 to 45.5 on what is likely some sharp action, with 82 percent of tickets on the Over, but 68 percent of money on the Under.

No surprise that The SuperBook opened this game with a nearly two-touchdown spread. But nobody was biting Sunday night, and the Ravens remained -13.5.

Giants at Rams odds

Opening line

Rams -11, Over/Under 47

Why the line moved

UPDATE 3:55 P.M. ET SUNDAY: The Rams are up to -13.5, after opening -12 at PointsBet USA, and Los Angeles is attracting 75 percent of tickets and money on the spread. The total moved from 48.5 to 47, then back to 49, and is getting two-way play, with 55 percent of tickets on the Over and 55 percent of money on the Under.

UPDATE 10:30 A.M. ET SUNDAY: At PointsBet USA, the Rams opened -12 and are now -13.5. PointsBet's Patrick Eichner said 80 percent of bets and 75 percent of money are on the Rams.

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: FanDuel opened the Rams -11 and moved to -12.5 in barely an hour Sunday night, and the line has stuck there ever since.

Los Angeles (2-1 SU and ATS) rallied from a 21-3 deficit at Buffalo and nearly pulled out the win, falling 35-32 on a last-minute Bills TD. New York (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) had a great opportunity at home in Week 3, going off as a 3-point pup against a 49ers outfit in need of a M*A*S*H unit. Yet the Giants got boatraced 36-9. So The SuperBook felt Rams -11 was about right Sunday night, and in fact, the line later went to -11.5.

Patriots at Chiefs odds

Opening line

Chiefs -7, Over/Under 53.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 6:45 P.M. ET MONDAY: William Hill US reopened this game at Kansas City -10.5 this morning and got to -12 a short time ago, with kickoff looming. "We need the Patriots for straight bets and everything else," director of trading Nick Bogdanovich said, alluding to plenty of parlay, moneyline parlay and teaser action on the Chiefs, as well.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET MONDAY: The Chiefs were touchdown favorites prior to the Cam Newton COVID news that took the Patriots QB out of this game. BetMGM reopened the game at Chiefs -11 and moved to -10.5 before returning to -11 this afternoon. Kansas City is getting 59 percent of point-spread tickets and 70 percent of money. "The book will need the Falcons and Patriots on Monday," BetMGM vice president of trading Jason Scott said. The total at BetMGM has very interesting betting splits, with 83 percent of tickets on the Over and 88 percent of money on the Under, which explains the move from 50 to 48.5.

UPDATE 2 P.M. ET MONDAY: After the news of Patriots QB Cam Newton's positive COVID test, and the subsequent rescheduling of this game to Monday night, DraftKings reopened at Chiefs -11 Sunday afternoon. The line dipped to Chiefs -10.5 Sunday night and stuck there, and Kansas City is taking 71 percent of bets/76 percent of money on the spread. The total reopened at 50 and is down to 48.5, despite the Over getting 78 percent of tickets/73% of money.

UPDATE 2 P.M. ET SUNDAY: The NFL announced that this game will be played Monday night, with a 7:05 p.m. ET kickoff, a little more than an hour before the Falcons-Packers Monday night clash. PointsBet USA's Patrick Eichner said this game just went back on the board, and with the Patriots minus quarterback Cam Newton due to a positive COVID test, the Chiefs are 11-point favorites. The total is 50.

UPDATE NOON ET SATURDAY: The huge mover in this game just happened, from Chiefs -7 to Chiefs -10.5 at The SuperBook, on the big news that Patriots quarterback Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19. However, news followed that this game is being postponed until at least Monday or Tuesday, and the game is off the board.

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: Kansas City dropped from -7 to -6.5 Thursday at FanDuel, despite getting the bulk of point-spread action, at 62 percent of tickets and 75 percent of money.

"We opened this game Chiefs -7. We discussed using -7.5, but we’ve noticed sharps betting against the Chiefs every week this season – with varying results so far," Murray said. "I expect good two-way handle here, with the Chiefs included in a lot of moneyline parlays, especially if they get by Baltimore on Monday Night Football."

Bills at Raiders odds

Opening line

Raiders +2.5, Over/Under 52.5

Why the line moved

UPDATE 3:55 P.M. ET SUNDAY: PointsBet USA opened the Bills -2.5 and spent most of the week at -3. Buffalo is taking 71 percent of point-spread bets and 77 percent of spread dollars.. The Bills are also getting 72 percent of moneyline tickets, but moneyline cash is split 50/50.

UPDATE 11 P.M. ET SATURDAY: The SuperBook opened Buffalo -2.5 and reached -3.5 Thursday, where the line is now. "The sharps and the public are on the same side in this game," Osterman said. "We have a pretty good-sized liability on the Bills. We have some takers on the Raiders spread, but not enough to sway our decision."

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: This line has been Bills -3 all week at FanDuel, save for a few minutes Monday at -2.5. Spread ticket count and money are both running about 4/1 on road favorite Buffalo. The total moved from 49.5 to 52.5, with tickets and money running about 3/1 on the Over.

The spread didn't move early, but the price did, with Buffalo going from -2.5 to -2.5 (-120). Murray has high expectations for betting on this Sunday matchup.

"This could end up being the monster-handle game of the week," Murray said. "The Bills come in 3-0, and Josh Allen is playing at a Pro Bowl level. I didn't expect to be saying that three weeks ago. The Raiders were in a terrible spot Sunday against the Patriots, and they wore down in the second half, but we still think they’re a solid team. I expect good two-way action here."

Eagles at 49ers odds

Opening line

49ers -5.5, Over/Under 45

Why the line moved

UPDATE 7:45 P.M. ET SUNDAY: Said South Point sportsbook director Chris Andrews: "It's all favorite. Everything is on the 49ers," noting straight bets, parlays, moneyline parlays and teasers. In addition, there are a lot of parlays running to the Over on tonight's total, which opened at 45 and got to 47, before dipping to 46.5. Asked if it's fair to say that, per usual, the book needs 'dog and Under, Andrews replied: "Oh yeah."

UPDATE 10:30 P.M. ET THURSDAY: The 49ers opened -6 at FanDuel, initially moved to 5.5 but are now up to -7. However, it's two-way action on this contest, with San Francisco getting 52 percent of tickets and 55 percent of cash on the spread.

UPDATE 11 P.M. ET TUESDAY: The 49ers are up to -7 at The Superbook, on a combination of two factors. "The steam is from Jimmy G having a chance to play, and the Eagles have been very disappointing this season, so the spread has been creeping up," Coombs said.

San Francisco QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) could return in Week 4, and early bettors might be thinking just that, as this line moved to Niners -6 Sunday night.

Falcons at Packers odds

Opening line

Packers -6.5, Over/Under 58

Why the line moved

UPDATE 6:45 P.M. ET MONDAY: William Hill US opened the Packers -7 and stayed there all week, but the move came today, down 1.5 points to -5.5. "We're dead even on the game, but we need the Falcons outright to kill the teasers," director of trading Nick Bogdanovich said.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET MONDAY: Green Bay opened -7.5 at BetMGM and is down to -6, but still getting the lion's share of tickets and money, at 76 percent and 71 percent, respectively. And much like Patriots-Chiefs, the total is seeing interesting action in moving from 58 to 56, then to 56.5: 82 percent of bets are on the Over, but 68 percent of money is on the Under.

UPDATE 2 P.M. ET MONDAY: The Packers opened -7 at DraftKings and poked up to -7.5 a couple of times last week, and the line was -7 this morning. However, it's now down to -6, at least in part to Green Bay star wideout Davante Adams (hamstring) announcing he won't play tonight. Still, the Packers are attracting 70 percent of bets and 71 percent of money on the spread. The total opened at 58.5 and got as low as 56 today before ticking up to 56.5, but tickets and money are running 82 percent on the Over.
