A pair of NFC powerhouses meet at Lincoln Financial Field with the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, January 12.

Philly won the Week 1 matchup, 34-29, and my top Packers vs. Eagles predictions and NFL picks for Wild Card Weekend expect another close game and another solid day from Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs.

Packers vs Eagles prediction

My best bet
Josh Jacobs Over 70.5 rushing yards (-120 at Caesars)

My analysis

While on the surface Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs lands in a difficult matchup this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles, I think Philly’s soft schedule has padded its defensive statistics.

The Eagles played the second-easiest schedule per PFF and fifth-easiest per ESPN’s NFL power Index. Opposing offenses often had to abandon the run, and I’m not anticipating Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur going that route Sunday.

Of course, Jacobs also ran for 84 yards (5.25 per carry) in Week 1 against the Eagles, and he rushed for 70 or more in nine of 17 games. Jacobs also yielded carries to backfield mates in four of the eight games he didn’t top the 70-yard benchmark because Green Bay was in the driver’s seat and won handily.

More to this point, Jacobs is also rested after handling just 36 carries across 82 offensive snaps over the final three weeks, including being limited to only six carries across 18 snaps in Week 18.

The added rest sets Jacobs up for a full workload Sunday, and I’m anticipating him approaching 20 carries and ceding much less work to fellow backs Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks with it all on the line at Lincoln Financial Field.

Plus, it isn’t as if go-to rushers haven’t had success against the Eagles this season.

Week Running back Rushing yards Yards per carry
Week 1 Josh Jacobs 84 5.25
Week 2 Bijan Robinson 97 6.93
Week 3 Alvin Kamara 87 3.35
Week 12 Kyren Williams 72 4.5
Week 13 Derrick Henry 82 4.32
Week 14 Chuba Hubbard 92 3.54
Week 17 Rico Dowdle 104 4.52

Finally, I’m also confident in Jacobs as a runner. He finished the season tied for fourth in PFF run grade and yards after contact per carry among backs with 200 carries, and his 33 rushes of 10-plus yards ranked sixth.

Packers vs Eagles same-game parlay

Packers +5

Under 45.5

Josh Jacobs Over 70.5 rushing yards

Again, I trust LaFleur and the Green Bay defense to keep this game competitive, and I value both the Packers going 5-2 against the spread down the stretch in addition to LaFleur’s 23-12-0 ATS record as an underdog (65.7%). Additionally, I don’t think the soft Philadelphia schedule is being fully accounted for.

Green Bay may have looked lackluster over the final two weeks of the season, but the Packers were always locked into a Wild Card spot. I’m happy to buy low with the points.

In addition to the already highlighted Under support, the Eagles also allowed the second-fewest points per game (17.8), while the Packers allowed the sixth-fewest (19.9). With both quarterbacks also missing time recently with injuries, I also expect both rushing attacks to be busy and keep the clock churning along.

For what it’s worth, going with the Packers moneyline instead of the +5 spread increases the odds for this same-game parlay to +700.

Packers vs Eagles spread and Over/Under analysis

  • There was early movement to the opening Eagles -4 spread at Caesars, with the shop hanging -5.5 briefly before settling at -4.5 for most of the week. The number moved to Packers +5 on Thursday and remains there as of Friday afternoon.
  • As noted by colleague Jason Logan, Wild Card underdogs have gone 24-12 against the spread across the past seven postseasons (67%).
  • This total dropped quickly from the opening 46.5 to 45.5 at Caesars and remains there as of Friday afternoon.
  • I agree with the move because I’m anticipating both teams leaning on the run after both starting quarterbacks missed time and were also limited during Wednesday’s practices.
