The hottest team in baseball rolls into the Windy City on Friday, as the Arizona Diamondbacks open a three-game set with the Chicago Cubs.
Arizona is riding a five-game win streak and is coming off a three-game sweep of the Marlins. With two of the most potent offenses in baseball, our Diamondbacks vs. Cubs predictions and MLB picks expect plenty of runs.
Diamondbacks vs Cubs prediction
My Diamondbacks vs Cubs best bet: Over 10.5 (-125 at Caesars)
The Chicago Cubs lead the National League in runs per game at 5.90 per contest. Right behind them are these Arizona Diamondbacks, who are dropping 5.47 runs per game.
Both are power players: Chicago has belted out 27 homers in 21 games, while Arizona has gone yard 26 times in 19 games. They look up to only the Dodgers in the NL, who are tied with the Yankees at 34 for the major league lead.
Corbin Burnes (0-1, 5.28 ERA) will get his fourth start of the year, still seeking his first win. Last time out, he went six innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits in an eventual 5-4 win over the Brewers.
The Central-leading Cubs are just 3-4 over their last seven games and are coming off their first series loss since losing both ends of a mini-set to the Dodgers in Japan to start the year. San Diego beat them 4-2 on Wednesday to take two of three, a series where the Cubs were outscored 15-7.
They turn the ball over to Colin Rea, who will be making his second straight start of the year after opening the season with three relief appearances, including picking up a save.
He was solid in his previous start, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing just four hits and an earned run while striking out five. This will be the fifth meeting of the season between these teams, after they split a four-game set in the Desert at the end of March.
The Over went 2-1-1 in the series, with the teams combining for 11+ runs in two of the starts. Although the Cubs are in a mini-funk, they're second in the NL in scoring at home, averaging 6.0 runs per contest. The Diamondbacks are second in runs scored on the road at 5.89.
Look for a high-scoring affair to set the tone for this series.
Diamondbacks vs Cubs same-game parlay (SGP)
Corbin Carroll has been rolling, picking up at least one hit in 13 of 15 games in April, and is hitting .339 for the month. Of those games, he’s gone for three total bases or more.
He hasn’t faced Rea a ton, with just five career at-bats, but he does have a couple of hits, including a double, and three RBI. I like him to be a strong table-setter for Arizona on Friday.
We’ll wrap with Cubbies DH Seiya Suzuki, who's hitting a crisp .359 in 11 April games, with three home runs and 12 RBI. In five of those games, he’s had at least two total bases.
He did have his troubles in Arizona during the four-game series, striking out eight times, but still managed to grab two total bases in two of the four games. He’s also recorded 2+ hits in each of his last three home games, and I expect him to be productive at home today.
