The New York Mets will look to build on their five-game winning streak as they host the Philadelphia Phillies for the middle game of their series on Tuesday night.
New York has been on a heater, and I see no reason for that to stop tonight, as I’m taking it to win again in my free Phillies vs. Mets predictions.
Let’s take a closer look at tonight’s matchup in my MLB picks for Tuesday, April 22.
Phillies vs Mets prediction
My Phillies vs Mets best bet: Mets moneyline (+115 at BetMGM)
When the New York Mets added Juan Soto in the offseason after reaching the NLCS last year, they immediately jumped into the shortlist of World Series contenders for 2025.
If there were any doubts that this team belonged in that conversation, those have largely been eradicated over the first few weeks of the season, as New York shares the best record in the majors at 16-7 and has gotten just enough hitting to support what has been an outstanding starting rotation.
Tonight, the Mets send one of the less certain aspects of that rotation to the mound in Griffin Canning, but even if the former Angels starter was a bit of a question mark heading into 2025, he's performed well for New York. Canning is 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA over his first four starts. Outside of some control issues — he’s walking 4.3 batters per nine innings — Canning looks comfortable in Queens, allowing two runs or less in 5+ innings of work in three of his first four starts.
The Philadelphia Phillies will counter with lefty Cristopher Sanchez, who's enjoying a great start to his year. Sanchez has seen his strikeout rate increase to 11.5 per nine innings — the highest mark of his career — and has a sterling 2.96 ERA so far on the season. Still, opponents have hit four homers in just 24 1/3 innings against Sanchez this year, a dangerous number against a Mets lineup that is hitting for power as of late, and which has hit slightly better against left-handed starters on the year.
Still, Philadelphia has a slight edge in the pitching matchup tonight, and there’s no denying how well their lineup can hit the ball. Yet, I’m still looking at the Mets as the smart bet tonight.
New York is 10-1 at home this season, and comes in riding a five-game winning streak. The Mets have consistently gotten solid performances out of their starters. While the bullpen has been a little shakier, as seen in the near-collapse in the ninth inning last night, the pitching staff as a whole has been outstanding, with just one opponent in their last 10 games managing more than four runs.
With Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto hitting well alongside a red-hot Pete Alonso, opponents can’t pitch around this lineup.
Phillies vs Mets same-game parlay (SGP)
Along with taking the Mets to continue their current winning streak, I’m also going to back the Over tonight in my SGP. While we have a solid pitching matchup, both of these lineups are finding ways to be effective right now, with New York’s stars powering its offense while Philadelphia continues to be one of the top-scoring teams in the league at 4.68 runs per game. The Phillies have hit the Over in eight straight games.
Speaking of New York’s star players, I’m also going to place a couple of prop bets on Francisco Lindor to round out my parlay. Lindor has led off each of the past two games with home runs, and hit a total of two homers last night.
I’m not going to pick him to homer again on Tuesday, but I am taking Lindor to both get a hit and a run on Tuesday. Lindor has hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games and has scored five runs in his last five outings as he continues to power the New York lineup from the leadoff spot.
