The San Francisco Giants face the Milwaukee Brewers tonight for the second of a four-game series. Veteran Jose Quintana takes the mound for Milwaukee and faces a San Francisco lineup that struggles against southpaws.
I’m eyeing his strikeout prop with my best bet in my Brewers vs. Giants predictions and MLB picks for Tuesday, April 22.
Brewers vs Giants prediction
My Brewers vs Giants best bet: Jose Quintana Over 3.5 strikeouts (-125 at DraftKings)
The San Francisco Giants have made waves to start the year as a breakout team playing well above preseason expectations. Give them their flowers, but let’s acknowledge one notable flaw. They don’t hit left-handed pitching well, sporting an 86 wRC+ and .212 AVG.
There’s a lot of swing and miss in their profile against LHP, which has led to a 26.2% K-rate against southpaws — the sixth-highest figure in the league.
The Milwaukee Brewers send Jose Quintana to the bump tonight, and while he’s not necessarily known for his strikeout prowess, he can potentially capitalize on the matchup.
The 36-year-old has remained steady in his older age, holding an ERA no higher than 3.75 in each of his last three seasons.
His 0.71 ERA through two starts is not sustainable, but his 3.83 FIP is encouraging. After throwing 100 pitches in his last outing, the veteran should have a long leash to work with.
The Colombian hurler’s K prop is set at 3.5 on Tuesday. He’s recorded four or more strikeouts in eight of his last 10 starts, so I’m buying the Over in a favorable matchup.
Oracle Park is a pitcher’s best friend. It’ll be a chilly day in the high 50s, which should offset the wind blowing out to center field.
The Giants have repeatedly allowed LHPs to rack up Ks. The Angels’ Yusei Kikuchi and Tim Anderson had six strikeouts, respectively, while the Yankees’ Carlos Rodon had eight.
Quintana is next in line for this favorable matchup, so sign me up for Over 3.5 strikeouts.
Brewers vs Giants same-game parlay (SGP)
San Francisco sends flamethrower Jordan Hicks to the bump tonight. He’s had a rough go of things lately, surrendering 15 earned runs across his last three starts to balloon his ERA up to 6.04.
Hicks doesn’t make batters miss (sixth percentile chase rate) and allows too much hard contact (seventh percentile hard-hit rate, 13th percentile average exit velocity).
The 28-year-old gets hit especially hard by lefties (.314/.429/.486) and will be in trouble against Christian Yelich. The veteran outfielder has consistently mashed right-handed pitchers (140 wRC+). Hicks throws his patented sinker 56% of the time against lefties and Yelich destroys that pitch (152 wRC+).
The book on the Giants is that they’ve been nearly unbeatable against RHP (13-2) but have been entirely human against LHP (2-6). I’ll bet on that trend continuing.
