Against the spread (ATS) pick
The Patriots controlled their contest against the Dolphins from start to finish, but a big reason for that was their secondary picking off three Ryan Fitzpatrick passes. Don't expect them to have the same level of success against Seattle's star quarterback Russell Wilson, who threw just five interceptions in 16 games last year.
Wilson is coming off a fantastic Week 1 where he completed 31-of-35 passes for 322 yards and four scores versus the Falcons. Although the Pats defense is never a pushover, Wilson has played well against Bill Belichick's squad in the past, throwing for 888 yards and eight touchdowns against just one interception in three games — none bigger than their Super Bowl matchup in 2015.
New England ran the ball down Miami's throat last week, rushing for 217 yards, including 75 yards from new signal-caller Cam Newton, although he didn't look entirely comfortable throwing the ball downfield. If the Pats fall behind early against the Seahawks explosive attack, they don't have the offensive playmakers to close the gap.
PREDICTION: Seattle -4 (-110)
Over/Under pick
While the Seahawks soared Over their total by combining for 63 points in Week 1, the Patriots dominated with ball control going well below their O/U with a total of 32 points. So which squad will be able to impose their preferred style of play on Sunday night?
Our money is on the Over. After all, New England is missing several key defenders from last year with Jamie Collins, Danny Shelton and Kyle Van Noy leaving via free agency while Dont'a Hightower and Patrick Chung opted out. The Seahawks also have question marks on defense, especially up front where Jadeveon Clowney departed after coming over as a one-year rental.
With the Over/Under set a reasonable 45, Wilson and Newton won't have to do too much to drag their squads over the number.
PREDICTION: Over 45 (-110)
Player Prop
Newton made things happen with his feet in Week 1 but his accuracy faltered on longer throws and to be fair the Patriots don't currently have any receivers that are deep threats.
Julian Edelman is their best receiver but plays primarily in the slot, N'Keal Harry is big but doesn't have much separation speed and Ryan Izzo is their starting tight end. Their No. 3 wide receiver is a guy named Damiere Byrd, who I had to look up because he didn't receive a single target on 56 snaps last week.
That said, Belichick knows how to maximize the talents of his players so don't expect him to be drawing up many deep pass plays for Newton. Take the Under 36.5 yards on Newton's longest pass completion of the day.
