Desert Heat In His Feet
With a rushing defense ranked No. 2 in DVOA at Football Outsiders and Arizona potentially down RB Chase Edmonds (game-time decision), the Cardinals are going to need a lot from Kyler Murray to keep the chains moving.
That also means Murray will be under fire from the Rams’ vaunted pass rush and likely called upon to freestyle with the football when the pocket collapses. Murray faced similar situations in last week’s win at Chicago, breaking free for 59 yards on the ground on 10 carries.
His injured ankle appears to be solid enough for those trademark scrambles, which is something he needed to do in his last run-in with the Rams. Murray rushed for 39 yards on six runs in a 37-20 victory over Los Angeles in Week 4.
His rushing yard total for tonight’s rematch is as low as 26.5 with the Over priced at -120. While Murray has gone over that bar just three times in 2021, and L.A. is among the best at slowing rushing QBs, Arizona needs the dual threat to do damage with his legs versus the Rams.
PICK: Kyler Murray Over 26.5 rushing yards (-120 at DraftKings)
Hanging with Mr. Cooper
Few teams have an answer for Rams WR Cooper Kupp when he gets rolling. However, Arizona has done a better job than most at slowing down the NFL’s leader in receiving yards.
Kupp recorded only five catches on 13 targets for a season-low 65 yards when the Cardinals beat the Rams back in Week 4. For his career, Kupp is averaging a modest 69 yards on just under six receptions per game over seven matchups with Arizona.
The Cardinals rank No. 2 in Defensive DVOA versus No. 1 WRs, holding those top targets to 6.9 grabs and just 44.5 yards per outing. Kupp’s receiving yards prop is as high as 93.5 yards at FanDuel (other books at 90.5) and we’ll be taking the Under -110 with the Cardinals secondary “hanging” with Mr. Cooper tonight.
PICK: Cooper Kupp Under 93.5 yards receiving (-110 at FanDuel)
OTT To OBJ
Sean McVay rekindled his love affair with playaction in last week’s win over Jacksonville and should look to attack Arizona’s soft run stop unit with plenty of handoffs to Sony Michel, which will help set up the play-action pass.
A healthy dose of the ground and pound will have Matt Stafford picking his spots to go over the top off playaction, striking for some home runs when Arizona strays closer to the line. And with the Cards collapsing on Cooper Kupp, who better to be on the receiving end of those deep shots than Odell Beckham Jr.
OBJ had a couple big catches in his last two games with a 27-yard reception last week and a 54-yard dinger against Green Bay. The Cardinals have allowed the fewest passing plays of 20 yards or more (24) on the season, which has Beckham Jr.’s longest receptions prop sitting at attainable 20.5 yards. He actually faced Arizona as a member of the Cleveland Browns back in Week 6, posting one of his best games of the season: 79 yards on five receptions including a 25-yard strike.
PICK: Odell Beckham Jr. Longest Reception Over 20.5 yards (-110 at Bet365)
