The New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks will square off Monday night in a battle of the Hughes brothers.

While the absence of dynamic center Jack Hughes certainly takes some life out of the matchup, my Canucks vs. Devils predictions still see the two defensemen making their mark in what could be a higher-scoring game than the market expects.

Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for March 24.

Canucks vs Devils prediction

My Canucks pick: Over 5.5 (+125 at Pinnacle)

My Canucks analysis
The Vancouver Canucks have not had a potent offense for much of the season, but it has come to life in recent weeks.

They've started consistently finding the net, scoring 3+ goals in five of their past six games. This has naturally led to higher game totals — six of their past seven have featured at least six goals.

Vancouver may need the goals to continue flowing against the New Jersey Devils, as Thatcher Demko is expected to be back between the pipes. He was playing some of his best hockey before the injury but has not seen game action in six weeks.

There's usually a drop in goaltender performance after extended absences, so Demko might not look as sharp as he otherwise would, which could open the door for New Jersey’s offense.

While the Devils absolutely miss superstar Jack Hughes, they’ve still managed to be competent offensively. They rank 12th in scoring chances and have converted on more than 11% of their shots over the nine games without him. They should be able to score their fair share.

The Devils must do just that, as they've struggled to keep the puck out of the net at the other end. They've allowed 32 goals over the last nine games, conceding the eighth-most in that span.

It’s also worth noting the Battle of the Hughes usually leads to a lot of offense. Seven straight head-to-head meetings have resulted in 6+ goals being scored, with all but this season’s prior matchup featuring 7+.

Canucks vs Devils odds analysis

The Devils are not in a good place right now. They’ve dropped three of the last four and six of the last 10, and head coach Sheldon Keefe just put defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic on blast following the team’s most recent game. That's unlikely to be good for anybody.

As such, the Canucks have taken plenty of money since open — even with the unknown injury status of Elias Pettersson, who's performed better of late.

The total has shifted even further toward the Under since opening, and the Over is trading at +125. With an implied probability of just 44.4% that we see six goals, that’s where I see the most value in this game.
