The Winnipeg Jets bring their poor form into Edmonton to take on an Oilers team that's coming off one of its best games of the season in a 5-2 win over the Leafs on Wednesday. This is the first game of a home-and-home as both clubs will play in Winnipeg tomorrow.
Connor McDavid has recorded a multi-goal game in five straight and could be the first player to score two or more in six straight in a century. There are some discrepancies in his goal pricing tonight, but facing Connor Hellebuyck who has allowed five goals in back-to-back starts, paying a little juice tonight is worth it.

Jets vs Oilers picks and predictions
Only two players in NHL history have scored two or more goals in six consecutive games and no one has done it in the past 100 years. Connor McDavid has a chance to become the first to accomplish the feat in over a century tonight vs. the Jets.
The soon-to-be MVP and Rocket winner has multi-goal games in five straight and has recorded 16 points over that stretch. They haven’t been easy opponents either as his last two games have come against the Bruins and Maple Leafs, who both sit in the Top 4 in GAA on the season.
The achievements keep piling up for @cmcdavid97 in 2022-23 and this time, the @EdmontonOilers captain joined rare company with five consecutive multi-goal games.#NHLStats: https://t.co/yIllJi2lAE pic.twitter.com/N65NRwXEyx

As of late Friday morning, McDavid is a reasonable -120 to score a goal at a handful of books but as short as -175 at Caesars. He’s scored in 28 of his last 41 games (68%) and has been skating with a different purpose over the last two weeks.
He’ll face a Winnipeg team that kept him off the scoresheet in the last meeting on New Year’s Eve and likely see a goalie in Connor Hellebuyck who has allowed five goals in back-to-back starts.
When McDavid wants to accomplish something, he’s impossible to stop, and with physical center Pierre-Luc Dubois questionable for the Jets, it could be easier for 97.
My best bet: Connor McDavid anytime goal (-120)

Jets vs Oilers moneyline analysis
The Oilers have built a more comfortable lead in the Western Conference playoff race as they currently sit seven points up on the ninth-place Calgary Flames. They’ve taken a point in six of their last eight games and are coming off two great home performances vs. the Bruins and Leafs. They also have a guy named Connor McDavid.
McDavid is stacking records and will be earning a lot of hardware this season. He’s unstoppable right now with 16 points over his last five games, is averaging 1.9 points per game on the season, and faces another Connor (Hellebuyck), who has allowed five goals in back-to-back starts. McDavid has a 1.5 point total that is -200 to the Over. He won’t be stopped tonight. But can the Jets minimize his output?
The Jets held McDavid scoreless on a Dec 31 meeting that Winnipeg won 2-1. The Edmonton forward did have over seven minutes on the power play and if Winnipeg takes another five penalties (18th in penalties taken), they won’t stop the league’s best power play. McDavid needs three more power-play points to tie Wayne Gretzky’s franchise record.
The Jets’ offense might not be able to go toe-to-toe with this No.1 offense, either. In Winnipeg’s last six losses over their last seven games, it’s scored two or fewer goals in five of them and one or fewer in four of those defeats.
The possible loss of Pierre-Luc Dubois won’t help matters as the No.1 center is questionable tonight after missing the last game. The Jets are also an average road team at 15-15 SU on the season and if Hellebuyck isn’t stealing wins, it will be a rough ride for a team clinging to the last playoff spot. The Jets have a .465 point percentage on the road since Christmas.
With the addition of Mattias Ekholm on the blue line and Stuart Skinner back into better form, this struggling Winnipeg offense is not a great matchup for the highest-scoring offense that's being fueled by the incredible play of McDavid of late.
In saying that, bettors might find more value in the Oilers’ team total of 3.5 that pays -125 to the Over instead of the -160 moneyline price.
In the Oilers’ 33 wins, 29 of them have come with them scoring four or more goals.
Jets vs Oilers Over/Under analysis
The last meeting was on New Year’s Eve and finished 2-1, but the Oilers finished with over 3.00 expected goals as Hellebuyck finished with plus-2.09 goals saved above expected in the win. However, the Winnipeg goalie comes into tonight having allowed 10 goals over his last two games and is 1-4 SU in his last five games with a 3.41 GAA and a .902 SV%. It’s part of the reason why we’re seeing the total move from 6.5 to 7 in a game with a Top-3 Vezina odds candidate.
Getting to Edmonton totals early can be beneficial to bettors as the total opened at 6.5 for Wednesday’s game vs. the Leafs, closed at 7, and finished 5-2. The Oilers have seen a closing total of 7 in 13 of their last 19 games, and have still gone Under in just four of them.
This is the No.1 offense in hockey at 3.82 goals per game while also boasting the best power play at 31.8% on the season and 33% at home.
The one thing holding me back from getting this 6.5 is the state of the Winnipeg offense. Dubois is questionable and that means Adam Lowry might be the second-line center, which isn’t optimal for an offense that has scored two or fewer in five of their last seven games.
The addition of Ekholm helps the Oilers defensively and the recent goaltending held the Bruins and Maple Leafs to five total goals over the last two games.
I’m off this full-game total but have put a full unit on the Edmonton team total Over 3.5 at -125 which might also be a better way to bet this total and at a better price.
