The Edmonton Oilers will try and sweep the season series when they host the Florida Panthers on Monday. They won the first of two matchups 4-2 on November 12.

Both teams have been just fair since that matchup, with the Oilers 2-3 since that victory and the Panthers 2-4 over that same span.

Will the Panthers get a split in this series or will the Oilers make it 2-0 in Florida? Continue reading for my best NHL picks and predictions for Panthers vs. Oilers.

Panthers vs Oilers picks and predictions

The last time these two teams met two weeks ago, Edmonton was able to win 4-2 as a +143 moneyline underdog. For Monday’s game, they opened at -115 but have seen the odds flip and are now a slight underdog at -105 with the Panthers listed at -115 in most spots.

The Panthers have 10 wins on the season, but have a road record of 4-6. This is the first game of a five-game road trip and Florida is expected to be without first-line center Aleksander Barkov.

The 21-year-old is dealing with an undisclosed illness that is not COVID-19. Barkov is the team’s fourth-leading points scorer with 18 (five goals, 13 assists).

Without Barkov, coach Paul Maurice moved his centermen up a line. Anton Lundell went from the second line to the first. Sam Bennett went from the third to the second, and Eric Staal moved up from the fourth line.

Lundell scored one of the goals in the team’s 5-4 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday at home. If Barkov can’t play, Lundell should help the offense. He has three goals and eight assists on the season.

Edmonton is also not without its offensive problems. Evander Kane and Kailer Yamamoto are both on the injured reserve. The two Top-6 forwards had combined for 16 points before they were knocked out of action and are replaced by Jesse Puljujarvi and Mattias Janmark.

The Bottom-6 forwards for Edmonton have been terrible, with just 12 points in 20 games. The top two lines have 128 points. They have just 12 points in 20 games.

The top two lines have 128 points, thanks to the No. 1 and No. 4 points leaders in the NHL in Connor McDavid (36) and Leon Draisaitl (32).

In the first game the two teams played, Kane and Yamamoto weren’t active so it might not be an issue. I like the Oilers to win again on Monday.

Panthers vs Oilers moneyline analysis

Goaltending has been an issue for Edmonton. Jack Campbell is 57th in goals against average at 4.04 and 57th in save percentage at .875. Though Campbell will probably start, Stuart Skinner might be the better option. Skinner is 25th in GAA at 2.78 and seventh in save percentage at .921.

Florida’s No. 1 goalie Spencer Knight will start and he is 18th in goals against average at 2.63. He is 14th in save percentage at .921. The 21-year-old has started seven of the Panthers’ last 10 games.

The two teams are pretty even offensively, with Florida 11th in goals scored per game (3.43) and Edmonton right behind them (3.33).

If the Panthers can control McDavid and Draisaitl, they cut off 35.4% of the points scored by the Oilers. In the last game between the two teams, the two each got an assist but did not score.

The issue with Florida is converting all the shots they take. They are first in the NHL, averaging 40.2 shots per game, but are 11th in goals for at 3.43.

The Panthers have also not fared well against the Western Conference of late, having lost their last four such games.

Conversely, Edmonton is 5-1 in their last six against the Atlantic Division. It should be 6-1 after Monday.

Panthers vs Oilers Over/Under analysis

The first matchup saw this game stay Under 7. This machup's total also opened at 7 but has since dropped down to 6.5. FanDuel has the Under 7 at -150 while the Under at 6.5 gets you +100.

The Under has gone 3-0-1 in the last four meetings between the two teams. The trends, however, favor the Over.

Edmonton is 4-1-1 O/U in its last six home games and is 16-5 in the team’s last 21 games against a team with a losing record.

Florida is even heavier on the Over, going 6-0 to the Over in its last six games and 4-0 to the Over in its last four road games. The Over is also 6-1 in their last seven against Western Conference teams.

Both teams have issues with goaltending. The Panthers are probably going with Knight over Sergei Bobrovsky. Knight has the better numbers with 2.63 GAA vs. 3.62 for Bobrovsky. Knight’s save percentage is .916, while Bobrovsky's is at .888.

Skinner started for the Oilers the last time these two met, stopping 40 of 42 shots, and has been the better goalie. He has a GAA of 2.78, while Jack Campbell is at 4.04. Skinner has a save percentage of .921 vs. .875 for Campbell.

The NHL odds for the Over at FanDuel are worth taking a flyer on at +120, especially if Campbell starts. It’s the best line for any of the total bets.
