With no football on tonight, it's a better NHL prop experience.
I've cooked up my three favorite plus-money NHL picks for the four-game slate, which include backing the Washington Capitals, betting on the Colorado Avalanche power play, and getting a Seattle Kraken line stack.
Here are my best NHL player props for Monday, January 6.
NHL prop picks and best bets for January 6
- Chychrun o0.5 points (+110 at bet365)
- Mittelstadt o0.5 PP points (+525 at bet365)
- Beniers + Kakko o0.5 points each (+400 at bet365)
Picks made on 1-6 at 1:45 p.m. ET.
Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets
Prop bet #1: Jakob Chychrun Over 0.5 points
The Buffalo Sabres are returning from a West Coast trip where they dropped three of the four games and now face a Washington Capitals team with Alex Ovechkin back. This is also a game between the most points in the East (Capitals) vs. the fewest points in the East (Sabres). It's a great game to fade the home team and a great bet is Washington in regulation at +110.
But this is a prop article and although I like the Ovi/Dylan Strome stack, it's a little too short around even money. Instead, I’m going to the Washington blue line and Jakob Chychrun for a point at +110 (buy to even money).
He is on the first power play, which has a goal in six of its last seven games and is 4-for-9 over the last three contests. He has six points over his last five games, including three points with the man advantage. There aren’t a lot of stacking opportunities with the way Washington is running its lines so continued production from the back end is my best prop angle here.
Prop bet #2: Casey Mittelstadt Over 0.5 power-play points
The Colorado Avalanche have been red hot after upgrading their goaltending as Mackenzie Blackwood is 6-1-1 with the new squad. They’ll host the Florida Panthers, who aren’t playing their best hockey as the offense is stalling out in the middle of the season. This is a game I like the Avs on the ML at -125 or better but getting anyone on this first power-play unit at +525 is something I can’t pass up.
With the injury to Val Nichushkin, Casey Mittelstadt's playing on the top PP and the second-line forward is paying +525 to get a PP point. These markets are always hit or miss as getting PP opportunities is critical, but the Cats have been short-handed 15 times over their last three games and will be playing their first game on the road since December 22. The Avs could certainly get their elite home PP going for 3+ chances tonight.
Anyone on this PP1 should not be longer than +280 for a PP point and if does get one, look for this prop to drop 200+ points next game.
Prop bet #3: Kaapo Kakko + Matty Beniers Over 0.5 points each
The New Jersey Devils have begun their six-game road trip losing the first four games. It has been a struggle for New Jersey of late but the Devils still enter tonight vs. the Seattle Kraken as a -245 away favorite. The Kraken can be competitive tonight on their fourth and final game of this homestand and I have been chasing this stack for a couple of games now with success just once, but it’s still profitable when it’s +400.
Matty Beniers and Kaapo Kakko are today's targets to each record a point. They are playing on the second power-play unit but Seattle does a very good job of splitting up the time between the two units. Kakko has points in three of his last five games and it’s not often you get a correlated line stack at this price anymore. Even the Chandler Stephenson and Jared McCann stack at +240 is worth a look.
There won’t be a lot of scoring in this game as the Devils are one of the best Under teams in hockey, but this price for Kakko and Beniers is tough to ignore. I wouldn’t bet it at anything below +320 though.
