The NHL has a smaller slate set for Sunday with five games, including four starting at 6 p.m. EST or later.

I’ll be focusing on three of the later games for today’s NHL player props. I’m targeting three wingers to keep firing the puck and finding the scoresheet on Sunday night.

Read on for my NHL picks on Sunday, January 5.

Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets

Prop bet #1: David Pastrnak Over 4.5 shots

+128 at bet365

David Pastrnak has come out of the holiday break firing the puck. The Boston Bruins winger has at least five shots on goal in all five games since Christmas with a total of 28 shots in that span.

Pastrnak has been taking a ton of shot attempts, with 10 in each of his last three games and nine in the first game after the break. He did manage five shots on goal on just six attempts in the Bruins’ last home game against the Blue Jackets.

The Czech winger’s shot totals are down a bit on the season, with 168 SOG in 41 games for an average of just over four per game, but the aggressiveness has been there over the last two weeks.

The New York Islanders are in the middle of the pack with 28.7 shots against per game. Look for Pastrnak to keep firing on home ice at this plus-money price.

Prop bet #2: Travis Konecny Over 0.5 points

-130 at DraftKings

Travis Konecny is on pace for a career year with the Philadelphia Flyers this season. The veteran winger leads the team in all three offensive categories with 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points in 39 games. In fact, he’s tied with William Nylander and Kirill Marchenko for the 19th-most points in the NHL.

Konecny has been fairly consistent for the Flyers this season with a point in two thirds of his games. That’s only gone slightly up on the road to a hit rate of 71%. After a more inconsistent first dozen games of the year, Konecny has a point in 33 of 39 games since November 5.

The Leafs are on the second half of a back-to-back set with backup Dennis Hildeby (.875 SV%) expected to start. Konecny should stay hot in his home province.

Prop bet #3: Troy Terry Over 0.5 points

-145 at DraftKings

Troy Terry has quietly put together a strong season for the Anaheim Ducks. He has 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) in 38 games and has really turned it on as of late.

Terry was held off the scoresheet in Edmonton on Friday night to end a four-game point streak coming out of the holiday break. He plays on Anaheim’s top line and power-play unit, so there’s plenty of opportunity for the 27-year-old winger to get on the board. He has a point in 63% of his games this season and 70% at home. That includes a point in four of his last five home games.

The Ducks are home underdogs against the Lightning, but Tampa Bay has lost three straight games. Terry and the Ducks can catch Tampa Bay off-kilter tonight.
