The Vancouver Canucks host the New York Rangers in one of Saturday night's late-window games, with the Rangers sitting as favorites across the board according to NHL odds.
Vancouver enters this game on the second half of a back-to-back following last night’s 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues, but can it pull off the upset against a New York squad looking for its fourth-straight win? Find out in my free NHL picks for Rangers vs. Canucks on Saturday, October 28.

Rangers vs Canucks predictions
Friday’s win over St. Louis marked the second consecutive game for the Vancouver Canucks where there were five total goals scored, and I think another low-scoring outing could be in-store on Saturday. While early-season back-to-backs do not necessarily harm teams as much as they do in January, we still shouldn’t be shocked to see some tired legs out there for Vancouver.
That could be problematic for an offense that ranks 30th in the league in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) at 5-on-5. Add to the fact the New York Rangers boast one of the best blue line/goaltending combinations in the league, then it's especially problematic.
New York ranks 10th in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) At 5-on-5, and backing up this strong blue line is goaltender Igor Shesterkin.
Last year, Shesterkin finished fifth among starting goaltenders in goals saved above expected per 60 minutes (GSAx/60) at 5-on-5. While he had a few rough starts to begin this campaign, Shesterkin found his form in his last start against the Calgary Flames — stopping 24 of 25 pucks for a .960 SV% en route to a 3-1 win. There have now been five or fewer total goals scored in each of the Rangers’ past five games.
Meanwhile, since Vancouver is on the second half of a back-to-back, backup goaltender Casey DeSmith is slated to get the start. Through three appearances in net this year, he is 2-0 with a .926 SV% and 2.73 GAA. Give me the Under in this affair.

Rangers vs Canucks same-game parlay
A lower-scoring matchup would benefit New York in this situation much more than Vancouver. If the game turns into Shesterkin-vs-DeSmith, give me Shesterkin all seven days of the week and twice on Sundays.
Furthermore, Vancouver is a team primed for regression. Whether that regression hits on Saturday remains to be seen, but it’s certainly on its way for a 5-2 team that ranks 26th in xGA/60 and 30th in xGF/60 at 5-on-5.
Add in the second half of a back-to-back against a fresher Rangers blue line and Shesterkin, and it’s going to be a tough task for the Canucks.

Rangers vs Canucks moneyline and Over/Under analysis
The Rangers opened as a –132 favorite and have since been bet up to -156. This line movement makes sense considering the variables I outlined in the previous section, and I only expect the number to get wider.
That brings us to the total, which opened at 6.5 and remains at that number depending on the book. With that said, I like the Under 6 at +102 much more than laying juice at 6.5, and I think we get another Shesterkin masterclass against a Vancouver offense that is primed for regression.
However, I expect DeSmith to hold his own enough to not allow in five goals.
