The New Jersey Devils will conclude their three-game season series against the Ottawa Senators tonight in Newark.

The first two meetings were both low-scoring affairs, with just seven goals scored in aggregate. My Senators vs. Devils predictions see that trend continuing, given the 5v5 woes of both offenses.

Let’s break things down further with my NHL picks for Saturday, March 22.

Senators vs Devils prediction

My Senators pick: Under 5.5 (-101 at Pinnacle)

My Senators analysis
The Ottawa Senators and New Jersey Devils consistently play in tight, low-scoring games. Only  28 of Ottawa’s first 68 games have gone Over the total while just 26 of New Jersey’s 70 games to date have done so.

One of the biggest reasons is the struggle both teams have creating offense during 5v5 play. Generating chances is a challenge, let alone finishing plays off.

The Senators sit 31st in scoring rate at 5v5 since the calendar flipped. That is not undeserved as they also slot second to last when it comes to generating expected goals.

Deadline acquisitions of Dylan Cozens and – as he fully gets integrated into the lineup – Fabian Zetterlund should help, but clearly, there’s a big jump to make.

New Jersey grades out a little better, sitting 24th in 5v5 scoring rate in 2025. They rank 27th in expected goals, though, and recently lost Jack Hughes and Dougie Hamilton for the remainder of the season.

Hughes was producing at a 93-point pace over a full season, while Hamilton is one of the best volume-shooting defensemen in the sport. Those are two crucial losses, which will make generating offense against a whole set of defenses even more difficult.

These teams have met twice this season. Only four goals were scored in their first meeting back in October, two of which came over the final eight minutes of play.

They followed that up with an even tighter game in the last go-around. Ottawa was able to grind out a 2-1 win in a game that featured just 46 combined shots.

There won’t be a ton of open ice to work with in this game, and the goaltending should be strong. Jake Allen ranks 3rd – behind only Connor Hellebuyck and Logan Thompson – in Goals Saved Above expected on the season.

Meanwhile, projected Senators starter Linus Ullmark owns a solid .907 save percentage (league average is .895) and is 6-2-1 over his last nine starts.

Senators vs Devils odds analysis

The Devils opened -121 favorites but have seen their implied edge slip, now trading at -112. They have been wildly inconsistent in 2025 and have struggled to score goals, which will likely be difficult again vs. Ottawa.

With Allen greatly outperforming Jacob Markstrom of late, I think that is one of the reasons the line hasn’t shifted even further in Ottawa’s direction.

The total remains at 5.5 but is now a little juiced to the Over at -112. Ottawa has played in some high totals games of late but I expect that to change against a New Jersey team that owns a 26-42-2 O/U record on the season.
