The Ottawa Senators have played a lot of high scoring games of late. Seven of their past nine have featured at least six goals, with low-event wins over bad teams (Detroit and Nashville) serving as the lone exceptions during that span.
Ottawa has averaged more than three goals per game, and the underlying numbers suggest the steady production is well deserved. The Senators generated a whopping 276 scoring chances over those nine games, which is the third-highest mark in the league.
Only the Devils and Capitals — both of whom are within two points of top spot in the NHL — outpaced the Senators in that time.
They should be able to score their share of goals against a Carolina Hurricanes team that is really struggling to keep the puck out of the net. The Hurricanes have conceded 40 goals over the last 10 games, and only 11 teams have allowed more expected goals.
They are giving up quite a bit defensively and their goaltending current tandem of Pyotr Kochetkov and Spencer Martin has not been able to mask the blemishes. Carolina will likely need a strong offensive performance to try and get a result in this game. That’s not an unreasonable thing to expect given what we’ve seen thus far.
Led by Hart Trophy caliber play from Martin Necas, the Hurricanes have done serious damage offensively all season long. The Canes rank first in expected goals, second in shots, third in power play percentage, and third in goals per game. They are a well-oiled machine offensively.
These two teams met once earlier this season and both offenses flexed their muscles — at least in terms of chance generation. They combined for 60 scoring opportunities and 6.8 expected goals.
With the way both teams are filling the net, there should be fireworks in this game if they can come close to replicating that kind of chance creation.
