A pair of playoff hopefuls meet in an Atlantic Division showdown at the Canadian Tire Centre, with the Ottawa Senators looking to make it three straight wins when they host the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, March 10.

My Red Wings vs. Senators predictions and NHL picks are headlined by the shooting ways of Ottawa defenseman Jake Sanderson.

Senators vs Red Wings prediction

My Senators pick
Jake Sanderson Over 2.5 shots (+126 at Pinnacle)

My Senators analysis
Ottawa Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson has returned from the 4 Nations Face-Off and picked up right where he left off. It’s been a breakout campaign for the third-year blueliner, with Sanderson ascending to the No. 1 role for the Ottawa defense corps and logging a monster 24:29 per game (3:29 on the power play).

This has resulted in Sanderson’s shot volume climbing to 5.78 shots and 12.73 attempts per 60 minutes after posting a respective 4.94 and 10.8 marks across his first two seasons. He also ranks in the 96th percentile of defensemen in shots on goal this year.

Additionally, I'm encouraged the 22-year-old blueliner has three or more shots in eight of 14 games with 7.46 shots and 15.79 attempts per 60 since returning from a lower-body injury in late January.

It’s also notable Sanderson’s shots and attempts climb on home ice, in addition to his 5-on-5 possession numbers.

Home Away
Shots per 60 6.49 5.14
Attempts per 60 13.98 11.59
5-on-5 Corsi For percentage 53.9% 47.4%
5-on5 Shot Share 57.0% 46.7%

Finally, the Detroit Red Wings check out as a sneaky matchup because of their poor 5-on-5 possession marks, too. Detroit ranks 25th with a 48.1 CF% and 29th with a 47.5% shot share.

Senators vs Red Wings odds analysis

There has been minimal movement to this moneyline at Pinnacle, with Ottawa opening at -163 and trading at the same number as of Monday afternoon. I consider it a fair price. The Sens are 18-9-2 on home ice and sport far superior underlying numbers at the Canadian Tire Centre than the road.

This total has seen a similar lack of movement. The two teams have trended to opposite sides of the total dating back to last season, too.

Ottawa has hit the Under in 42 of its last 82 games (+5.00 Units / 6% ROI), while Detroit has only gone Under the number in 36 of its last 82 games (-8.45 Units / -10% ROI).
