Utah NHL Team Name Odds: Steady Yeti

With Utah landing a new (old) hockey team in the Arizona Coyotes, a full-on rebrand is underway and the team has yet to pick a nickname. Yeti (+300) remains the betting favorite, with Outlaw right behind it at +330.

They say change is hard, but there is something glorious about having the ability to start fresh and change the narrative around you.

With a failing franchise in Arizona, the NHL did what needed to be done (finally) and relocated the Coyotes to Salt Lake City, Utah. This was a much-needed and long-overdue move, and while some people will have gripes about the location, Utah has the chance to turn the Coyotes franchise into a respectable one.

The owners have decided on a full rebrand and even held a poll for fans to choose the team's name. Sportsbooks have priced the Yeti as the betting favorites, but does that make the most sense?

Join me as I put on my detective hat and break down the NHL odds for Utah's team name.

Utah team name picks

Favorite: "Yeti" (+300 at FanDuel)

For as funny as "Utah Yeti" sounds, it makes the most sense from a marketing standpoint.

It's unique and it opens up a plethora of creative merchandising opportunities that would be a significant revenue stream from mascot to jersey design to team apparel.

Not to mention the rich history of folklore and mythology surrounding the Yeti and that particular area. It also helps that Yeti is often associated with strength and ruggedness, something NHL teams strive to be.

For this reason, the Yeti is the betting favorite, and rightfully so.

Sleeper:
"Glaciers" (+920 at FanDuel)

If ever there was a team name that represents the region, it would be the Glaciers.

Salt Lake City is known for its diverse geography, including mountains and glaciers, and it would be a way to make the fan base feel like the team is actually where it's supposed to be.

For the more environmentally conscious crowd, this could open doors to partnering with local preservation organizations and initiatives looking to combat climate change and increase awareness surrounding glaciers and other issues facing the planet. While this seems unlikely, there is a logical throughline if this name gets chosen.

Long shot: "Mountaineers" (+1,500 at FanDuel)

Similarly, "Mountaineers" would fit the region well and would essentially be a welcoming name for the fan base to rally around.

The mascot, jersey design, and team appeal would be similar to that of the purple Utaz Jazz jersey, but I am a fan.

Again, this is a long-shot idea, but it fits the bill.

My best bet: Yeti (+300 at FanDuel)
