My analysis
Chelsea have had several issues this season.
In recent weeks and months, they’ve been hit with many injuries, and their squad looks like a mismatch of talented players with no coherent style or strategy — which, in fairness, it is.
They’re without Nicolas Jackson, meaning Christopher Nkunku is upfront, and he’s failed to show why Chelsea spent such a large sum to bring him in. That’s put huge pressure on Cole Palmer — the team’s leading scorer — but he’s not getting the help he needs and looks out of form.
However, there aren’t many opportunities better than a home game against Southampton to play your way back into form. The Saints have given up a Premier League high of 61 goals in 26 games and have conceded seven in their past two games alone. This team struggles hugely with attacking movement, something Palmer excels in as he plays between the lines.
Palmer leads Chelsea in both goals and assists in EPL play with 14 goals and six helpers. He’s only scored twice in 2025, and those were back-to-back appearances in early January. It’s been six games in all competitions since he last scored — his longest goalless streak this year and one he is set to end.
Palmer averages 3.5 shots per game in the Premier League, a team high. Even in the weekend’s defeat to Aston Villa, he took three shots. He’s been very close to scoring multiple times during this drought.
His ability is still there, and data shows he’s still taking shots and making chances. Therefore, he is due for positive regression, and a matchup against the Premier League’s worst defense should offer that.
Chelsea vs Southampton same-game parlay (SGP)
There have only been four games this season in which Chelsea haven’t conceded, and incredibly, they’ve given up a goal in all but one of their EPL games at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Southampton have tallied in four straight away games in the league and are more than capable of scoring goals — especially given the flaws in Chelsea’s defense.
However, Southampton have given up 61 goals in just 26 games, more than any other team in the Premier League, which is why I expect Chelsea to still win by two or more goals.
Southampton’s past two games have seen them lose 3-1 to Bournemouth and get taken apart 4-0 by Brighton. Chelsea still have attacking talent in their team and will score a couple of goals past this Saints team, much like they did when they won 5-1 at Southampton in December.
