Colombia vs Panama Odds, Picks & Predictions: Sanchez Keeps Shooting in Copa America Quarterfinal

Davinson Sanchez has been ruthlessly efficient for Colombia at Copa America, and our soccer betting picks see him and James Rodriguez overpowering Panama's defense on Saturday night.

Colombia hasn’t lost a match since Nestor Lorenzo took over, winning 17 of his 23 matches in charge. They had a 10-match winning run ended by Brazil but managed to hold onto a 1-1 draw that saw them win their Copa America group.

Panama managed to finish second in their group behind a massive upset win over the United States. But they were subsequently trounced by Uruguay and will need to perform better here to avoid the same fate.

We discuss one player in particular who is going to cause issues for them on set pieces in our Colombia vs. Panama predictions for Saturday, July 6 based on the best Copa America odds.

Colombia vs Panama picks, predictions, and betting tips

My best bet:
Davinson Sanchez 2+ shots (-122 at Betano)

My analysis

How good is Davinson Sanchez when it comes to attacking set pieces? If you go by the numbers, he might be the best in the entire competition.

When Colombia faced Paraguay to open group play at Copa America 2024, they earned only three corners on the day. Sanchez got on the end of two of those for his only two shots of the match.

Fast-forward to their win over Costa Rica. Sanchez scored the second of his side’s three goals on the day, heading home a corner from eight yards out. It was one of only four corners on the day, and Sanchez got on the end of two of those. He also was on the receiving end of two free kicks.

Colombia earned five corners against Brazil, the only match in which Sanchez was held off the shooting chart. But in his defense, he had two of the world’s best central defenders marking him as Marquinhos and Eder Militao took turns negating his aerial ability. That said, he had a headed goal taken away from him by a very controversial offside call.

Panama has no such weapons in their back line, and James Rodriguez shouldn’t have trouble finding him. He’s been rejuvenated in this competition, and his set-piece delivery has been exquisite. Sanchez has been his primary target,

Panama conceded 11 corners in the group stage, despite allowing none against the United States as they played more than 70 minutes with a man advantage. Uruguay had nine of those, as well as a handful of free kicks. One of those led to the stoppage time goal for Matias Vina.

Colombia have drawn the fifth-most fouls in the competition and that’s allowed James quite a few set pieces. They’re going to keep Panama pinned deep with their ball-winning high press, which should lead to corner kicks. Look for Sanchez to get on the end of at least two of them once again.

Colombia vs Panama same-game parlay (SGP)

Davinson Sanchez 2+ shots

James Rodriguez 1+ assist

Colombia moneyline

James Rodriguez has 7.12 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes, the second-most of any player at Copa America, with eight coming from dead-ball situations. He notched an assist in each of the first two group matches, and only the iffy VAR decision denied him of making it a clean sweep. He’s assisted three goals thus far, and if not for offside decisions could have six. We’ll back him to get another one here.

Panama will be without their star midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla as he was hit with a two-match ban for his red card against the United States. Even with him, Panama couldn’t handle the pressure levied against them by Uruguay, and Colombia’s might be better. Colombia had won 10 straight matches prior to the Brazil clash, and they’ll get back to their winning ways here.
