Group A kicks off Copa America proceedings on Thursday, June 20 with a meeting between the current holders Argentina and debutants Canada.
Given the way the Copa America 2024 odds are shaking out, Group A figures to be Argentina's to lose, with Peru, Chile, and the aforementioned Canadians all fighting for second place.
Join me as I break down Group A ahead of Copa America 2024.

Copa America 2024 Group A best bet
Canada Over 2.5 Group A goals (-143 at Betano)
Canada has the unenviable task of taking on the holders Argentina in their first match to kick off the tournament. While Argentina is the clear-cut favorite, and boasts a stingy defense, attacking them may be the only chance Canada has at getting a point.
A nil-nil is unlikely given the firepower Argentina boasts, so a single goal here would go a long way in helping this bet.
However, if that doesn't come to fruition, fear not. Peru's defense is less than stellar, giving up eight goals in six CONEMBOL World Cup qualifying matches and an additional _____ in their last two friendlies.
Despite being underdogs, the Canadians will enter this game knowing three points is a must, and with high-level players in their XI, they should bag at least two.
In the finale against Chile, another team conceding a goal per game in WCQs, Canada will do well to find the back of the net if they want any chance of advancing.

Copa America 2024 Group A team previews
Argentina (-500 to win group)
Argentina enters Copa America 2024 as not only the defending Copa America champions but World Cup champions as well.
They've been in blistering-hot form with just two losses since 2021 — a span of 30 games. They are led by the greatest of all time, Lionel Messi, and with him wearing the shirt, Argentina are more than capable of defending their crown.
However, not to be overlooked is an incredibly deep roster that features the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria, Julian Alvarez, and Alejandro Garnacho. That's just up front.
Perhaps the biggest strength Argentina possesses is their world-class midfield trio and a stout defense that's kept 11 clean sheets over their last 13 fixtures in all competitions.
Chile (+670 to win group)
It's not exactly been smooth sailing for Chile over the last two-plus years as they've done way more losing than winning.
This Chilean team currently sits eighth out of 10 in World Cup 2026 qualifying with just five points through six matches.
The biggest problem for Chile is their lack of attacking prowess. An aging Alexis Sanchez will once again be the focal point in attack, but it's simply not enough. They've netted just three times in those six games, which isn't going to cut it if they hope to progress out of Group A.
Peru (+1,350 to win group)
Then there's Peru. The outsiders in the group, and in my opinion, the weakest team in the tournament.
Peru sits dead last in CONEMBOL World Cup qualifying with just two points from six matches. They've given up eight goals and scored just one.
This is a team with very limited attacking options and one that will try to soak up as much pressure as possible before snatching a winner at the death.
That's simply not going to play out well for them in Group A.
Canada (+1,400 to win group)
Canada make their long-awaited debut at Copa America and believe it or not, I give Canada a very good chance at progressing through to the knockout rounds.
The last we saw from Canada was in the World Cup as they went 0-0-3 to finish last, but lessons have been learned and progress has been made.
They have a very solid roster from top to bottom, led by Alphonso Davies and Jonathan Davies, who finished second in Ligue 1 scoring to Kylian Mbappe.
If the midfield can hold up against two teams in Chile and Peru who are struggling for form, Canada could very well win both those games.
A pre-tournament warm-up vs. France will boost the confidence as the game finished 0-0 with many French regulars in the lineup.
Copa America 2024 Group A players to watch
Lautaro Martinez (Argentina/Inter Milan)
Most of the attention surrounding Argentina will be on Lionel Messi and rightfully so, but Argentina will need Lautaro Martinez to lead the line and score some big goals this tournament.
Martinez is coming off his best scoring campaign of his career at Inter, where he netted 24 goals in 33 matches. With fantastic service from the midfield, Martinez could be in with a shout to lead the tournament in goals.
Martinez — Top goal scorer (+1,000 at Betano)
Jonathan David (Canada/Lille)
Jonathan David has quickly made a name for himself in Ligue 1 as he's finished Top 3 in goalscoring in each of the last two years.
He'll be front and center of this Canadian attack and he'll need to have an impact if the Canadians have any shot at making the knockout round. Given my feelings on Canada's chances, and my Group A best bet, I am aboard the David train and I believe he'll leave his mark.
David — Top goal scorer for Canada (+250 at Betano)
Alphonso Davies (Canada/Bayern Munich)
Speaking of leaving his mark, Alphonso Davies has done some pretty incredible things for Canada in his young career, but he's entering this tournament in poor form for Bayern Munich. It'll be interesting to see if Davies can bounce back and lead his country to success.
