Leicester City vs Tottenham Predictions & Picks for Today’s EPL Matchup

Leicester City will receive a tough test upon their return to the Premier League when they host Tottenham Hotspur on Monday. Manager Steve Cooper has taken over the newly-promoted side and must contend with multiple injuries in attack. That won’t make things easy against a Tottenham side that bolstered its front line with the addition of Dominic Solanke.

My analysis
The atmosphere at the King Power Stadium will be electric, as Leicester City celebrate their first match back in England’s top flight after a season in the Championship, but there are concerns both on and off the pitch that could prove problematic for this match and many beyond.

Cooper takes over following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca to Chelsea. With possible financial punishments hanging over the club, it’s making it difficult for him to bolster the side after their best midfielder followed Maresca to the London club.

Because of this, Cooper must try to somehow stymie a dangerous Tottenham side without the ability to bring in depth. He'll be without the services of striker Jamie Vardy or winger Patson Daka, the latter of whom will be out for a few months. He’ll also be without defender Conor Coady, with midfielder Luke Thomas a doubt as well.

Not only will this force Cooper to set his side up a bit more defensively, but it takes away two of his most important players on the counter-attack. And with Tottenham’s backline fully healthy for the first time in ages, that compounds the challenge.

Ange Postecoglou will be happy to see his new toy in the starting XI, with Solanke offering Spurs the reliable goal-scoring threat up top they were lacking last season. Star forward Heung-min Son and midfielder James Maddison both got a summer of much-needed rest, and this Spurs team looked good in the preseason. 

Son has tormented Leicester in his career, with nine goals and four assists in 14 matches against the side. The addition of Solanke and the presence of Maddison will make it very difficult for Leicester to key on Son, and that’s without the added threat of Dejan Kulusevski on the opposite wing.

There will simply be too many options for Spurs, and Leicester won’t be able to hold them off for a full 90 minutes. Without the pace of Doku to help pin back the Tottenham fullbacks, they’ll eventually find their defenses breached and from there, it should be an easy one for Spurs. Keep it simple here and back Tottenham to capture all three points.

All but five of Tottenham’s 19 away fixtures last season saw 3+ goals scored. While part of that was due to injuries in their defense, it’s also because teams tended to play a bit more openly. That allowed Spurs to hit on the counter through Son and Kulusevski.

Had Richarlison been able to convert chances, that number would’ve grown. Solanke is a much more clinical finisher and that will lead to even more goals for the side this season.

That’s not to mention the suspension of holding midfielder Yves Bissouma for Spurs, which might leave them a bit more open in the midfield to the counter. I could see Leicester stealing a goal at some point, which makes the Over even more likely. 

Last season, only three teams took more shots than Spurs, as they averaged 15.3 shots per match, but that number went up to 20 on average in their six league fixtures against newly-promoted sides. 

That includes 21 shots away at Burnley in a 5-2 win and a 3-0 victory at Sheffield United that saw them attempt 18 shots. I like the alternate line here of 17+ shots in a match that should see them having to pick through the Leicester defense.
