Arsenal have plenty of ground to make up to catch Liverpool, and they won't play around with Manchester United on Sunday.

My analysis
Manchester United could almost field a full squad simply from the players that will miss this match. They’re facing a midfield crisis with Kobbie Mainoo out and Manuel Ugarte unlikely to be fit. In the back, Harry Maguire is in doubt, with Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans hurt and Patrick Dorgu suspended.

But the biggest injury is Amad Diallo, without whom the Red Devils have truly struggled to create chances.

While they’ve scored eight goals in five matches since he went down, three came against Ipswich — one of which was an own goal — and two others came when Everton capitulated in the second half.

The Red Devils played Thursday in Europa League, earning a 1-1 draw against Spanish side Real Sociedad. But while they dominated the first 65 minutes of the match, they managed just one goal and looked utterly toothless after conceding the equalizing penalty.

Jonathan Zirkzee’s opener was the only goal scored by a Man United forward in their last five matches, and that should hold true against Arsenal. The Gunners are coming off a thrashing of PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday in the Champions League, winning 7-1 on the night. The only goal they conceded was a penalty, just the sixth goal allowed in their last nine matches across all competitions.

Arsenal’s stout back line will stunt Manchester United’s attack. The Red Devils knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup on penalties in January, with Bruno Fernandes scoring their only goal. But it was completely against the run of play, as they managed just 0.27 xG over 120 minutes. While they were down a man after the hour mark, they managed just 0.09 xG in the first half.

The extra two days of rest are a key factor in this match. Manchester United didn’t have a single forward available off the bench against Real Sociedad, and they’re very thin in both midfield and defense.

Dorgu’s suspension means the likely introduction of Victor Lindelof in defense, with Noussair Mazraoui moving out to a wingback role. Should Maguire be unable to go, the move would leave them with no senior defenders on the bench.

This matters because Manchester United have been horrific at defending corner kicks this season. They’ve given up more set piece goals than any team in the league by a wide margin, and Arsenal thrive on scoring in dead-ball situations. In a match where they’re likely to face plenty of them, they won’t have fresh bodies to bring in to see out the match.

Injuries to Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus have left Arsenal’s attack lacking teeth. However, the ability to attack the host's vulnerability from the corner flag will yield at least one goal.

Man United vs Arsenal same-game parlay (SGP)

Arsenal moneyline

Man United Under 0.5 goals

Arsenal Under 2.5 goals

Arsenal Over 6.5 corners

Man United have lost the corner battle in four of the last five across all competitions, and Arsenal have dominated it against their opponents. They had only three corners against PSV as they turned their chances into goals, but they had more corners than their opponents in the previous 13 matches.

During that span, Arsenal averaged 8.5 corners per match. They had 10+ corners on seven occasions, and at least seven corners in nine of them. They had seven in regulation in the FA Cup loss to Man United, and will at least replicate that here.

Before the thrashing of PSV, the Gunners had managed just two goals in their previous four matches in all competitions. They scored just once against Man United in the FA Cup, despite taking 26 shots in 120 minutes and having a man advantage for over an hour.

If the Red Devils weren’t so poor against corners, I’m not sure I’d back Arsenal to score. That said, it’s very hard to see them scoring twice, let alone three times. Take Arsenal to score two or fewer in this one.
