Side analysis
After a two-week international break, the Premier League returns and we pick up where the season was left.
The final game of an action-packed Saturday sees Man United welcome Brendan Rodgers and his Leicester team to Old Trafford. While some fans would have been counting down the days until the return of club football, it’s likely that some players would have enjoyed the time away.
It’s been a tough season for Man United as they enter this weekend sixth in the Premier League. They’re now battling with Arsenal and Spurs for that final Champions League spot and it’s the Gunners who sit in the driving seat and don’t look like giving up anytime soon.
While they get better and better with each game, it’s been a frustrating season with the team, often taking one step forward and two steps back. Sometimes you see glimmers that Rangnick’s coaching is getting through to the players, and then at other points, they look like a group of players who haven’t ever met before.
Since their last Premier League game, they’ve been knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid and are now in a rare situation for this club, having no trophies to fight for at the start of April. The atmosphere at United has looked toxic for some time with various reports coming out of the dressing room.
You’d certainly have thought that a lot of those players would have enjoyed the time away with the national teams. Harry Maguire was booed by some idiotic England fans but the team supported him and his on-field performance was good. Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Dalot, and Bruno Fernandes helped their teams qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
The sheer volume of players at United who went away with their teams is high compared with Leicester, and the miles racked up traveling could be an issue. Leicester are welcoming back long-term injured players Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans, although it’s hard to know if either will play.
Two players who won’t be playing are talisman Jamie Vardy and Wilfred Ndidi. Vardy is injured and Ndidi has had season-ending surgery. We should see Rangnick set his team up in their usual 4-3-3 with Rodgers likely to send Leicester out in a 3-4-3.
Man United are the bookies' favorites but the odds of -200 are so short that they really can’t be backed. Man United aren’t consistent and have only won one of their past five games in all competitions. At those odds, it makes no sense to back them when this game feels so evenly poised.
After a dreadful start to the season, Leicester have kept improving and went 3-1 in their four Premier League games during April. If you’re looking for value, then you have to bet on Brendan Rodgers' men who have the defensive shape and ability to frustrate Man United and hit them on the counter and bag those three points.
Prediction: Leicester +500 (Odds)
Over/Under analysis
Man United's games have been fairly mixed this season with 48.3% of their matches seeing three or more goals, most notably their last home game in which they beat Spurs 3-2.
They’ve scored plenty this season but they’ve been bad at the back, giving up more goals than any of their rivals in the race for the top four. Meanwhile, there have been over 2.5 goals in 69.2% of Leicester’s games on the road this season. Not only that, but the first time they met this season the game finished with six goals.
Given that history, I’d lean toward backing Over 2.5 goals here even if the odds aren’t attractive.
Prediction: Over 2.5 goals (-180)
Best bet
Manchester United’s Portuguese magician Bruno Fernandes has been a revelation since he arrived from Sporting Lisbon in 2020. He’s scored goals, provided assists, and has become the team’s primary creative force.
It’ll be a week of celebration now that he’s been rewarded with a new contract and sealed a place at the World Cup with his country. Alongside his brilliance with the ball, there is one other thing that Fernandes has become known for since his arrival in the Premier League. He’s picked up seven bookings in 26 games, an average of a card every 3.7 games. That rate has increased slightly from last season and you can often see that Fernandes is exasperated with his club’s poor performances.
Saturday’s game will be officiated by Andre Marriner who gives out an average of 3.47 yellows per game. If United struggles to get a handle on the game early, then Fernandes will get frustrated and the odds of him getting booked when battling against a tough midfield including Youri Tielemans are high.
Pick: Bruno Fernandez to get booked (+390)
