DENVER -- Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black dropped slumping Carlos Gonzalez to sixth in the lineup, hoping the right fielder would feel a little less pressure.
Gonzalez responded with a season-high three RBIs on Thursday night as the Rockies built a 10-run lead and held on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-7.
Los Angeles' season-high five-game winning streak ended as the Rockies, who have won five of their past six games, beat them for the fourth time in six tries this season.
The Rockies (23-13), who are off to the best start in franchise history after 36 games, feasted on left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-5), scoring two runs in the first, five in the second and three in the fourth.
Ian Desmond doubled home two runs with two outs in the first. The Rockies scored five two-out runs in the second, all unearned because of catcher Austin Barnes' throwing error. Nolan Arenado and Gonzalez each hit two-run doubles, and Mark Reynolds singled home a run in that rally, which included five hits and two walks.
Gonzalez, who had batted third or fourth all season, entered the game hitting .188 with two home runs, seven RBIs and a .286 slugging percentage. He was 3-for-27 with runners in scoring position and had no extra-base hits in eight games since April 28.
Jeff Hoffman (1-0) earned his first major league win, working 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with a career-high eight strikeouts. He made his 2017 Rockies debut in a relief outing as the 26th man on the roster for the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday and was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque when scheduled starter Tyler Anderson was pushed back two days because of left knee inflammation.
Hoffman limited the Dodgers to two singles through four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts before the Dodgers began to lift the ball and make solid contact.
Pinch hitter Scott Van Slyke homered in the fifth. A double by Cody Bellinger and triple by Chase Utley netted a run in the sixth, and Hoffman was charged with another run when Barnes doubled off Jordan Lyles, who gave up two runs in 2 1/3 innings.
The Dodgers cut the lead to 10-7 in the ninth when Enrique Hernandez led off with a double against Scott Oberg and scored when Brett Eibner followed with a single. After Bellinger singled, Black summoned closer Greg Holland.
Holland gave up a single to Chris Taylor to load the bases but got Chase Utley to ground into a double play that brought in a run. Yasiel Puig struck out, sealing Holland's 15th save in as many chances.
Ryu made his first start since April 30 after being reinstated from the disabled list following a left hip contusion. He surrendered 10 runs (five earned), eight hits and six walks while throwing 101 pitches in four innings.
Colorado made it 10-0 in the fourth. With three infielders to the right of second base, Gonzalez beat the shift by grounding a ball to the left of the base for a run-scoring single after DJ LeMahieu walked and Desmond was hit with a pitch.
Pat Valaika followed with an RBI double, and a run scored on Ryu's balk to make it 10-0.
