PITTSBURGH -- Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray pitched the first shutout of his major league career Tuesday in a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.
In his 72nd start dating to 2014, Ray (5-3) yielded just four hits while striking out 10 on 115 pitches, extending his scoreless streak to 24 2/3 innings. He didn't issue a walk.
Pirates hard-luck starter Ivan Nova (5-4) retired the first 12 Arizona batters he faced but still earned the loss. He pitched seven innings, giving up three runs, striking out three and walking one.
Arizona broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning. With one out, Rey Fuentes sent a soft line drive into left field for a single. Ray sacrificed him to second, putting the first Diamondbacks runner in scoring position. Chris Owings then lined a double off the wall in deep left-center field, and the D-backs led 1-0.
Paul Goldschmidt doubled and Lamb singled to start the Arizona seventh. Nova struck out Yasmany Tomas, but Brandon Drury reached on an infield single to deep short that scored Goldschmidt and made it 2-0. Nova issued his first walk, to Chris Herrmann, loading the bases. Fuentes grounded out, scoring the third Arizona run.
Neither team mounted a threat in the first three innings. Leading off the Pirates' fourth, Josh Harrison lofted a short fly ball to center field. Fuentes sprinted in, but the ball fell several feet behind him for a double. Josh Bell grounded out, advancing Harrison to third, and David Freese and Francisco Cervelli struck out.
Jake Lamb lined a single leading in the fifth for the D-backs' first hit. Nova got Tomas to pop out and induced Drury's double-play grounder.
NOTES: The Pirates placed backup C Chris Stewart on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain and recalled C Elias Diaz from Triple-A Indianapolis. Diaz was hitting .281 at Indianapolis with two home runs and 18 RBIs. He also went 2-for-9 with a double and two walks in four games with the Pirates earlier this month. ... Pirates manager Clint Hurdle kept UT Adam Frazier out of the starting lineup for a second straight game for rest purposes. Frazier singled as a pinch hitter. ... Pirates RHP Ivan Nova's sixth-inning single broke an 0-for-28 streak. ... Arizona 3B Jake Lamb was the only player on either team to collect two hits.
