ST. LOUIS -- With help from Dexter Fowler, St. Louis Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez cooled off the red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers.
Fowler broke a tie in the eighth inning with a two-out solo homer after Martinez checked Los Angeles on four hits in eight innings, giving him a 2-1 win Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.
Martinez (4-4) walked three and struck out nine as he ended the Dodgers' six-game winning streak and lifted the Cardinals (25-25) to only their fourth win in 14 games.
Fowler pounded a 2-1 slider from reliever Ross Stripling (0-3) 429 feet over the St. Louis bullpen in right-center field for his seventh homer of the year.
Seung-Hwan Oh picked up his 12th save in 14 chances, pitching around Adrian Gonzalez's leadoff single in the ninth. Gonzalez's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth plated the only run for Los Angeles (33-21).
The Dodgers wasted a quality start by Hyun-Jin Ryu. He pitched six innings, permitting three hits and a run with one walk and four strikeouts.
St. Louis initiated scoring in the second inning on a two-out RBI double to center by rookie Paul DeJong that plated Tommy Pham. Chris Taylor played it like the converted infielder that he is, coming in on the liner and then chasing after the ball as it sailed over his head.
Pitching dominated the rest of the first five innings. Martinez checked the red-hot Los Angeles attack on two hits and two walks, striking out five and retiring 14 of 16 hitters after the first two reached base.
Ryu allowed only three hits and an intentional walk through five, notching three strikeouts. He started in place of Alex Wood, who was placed on the disabled list Monday.
NOTES: St. Louis recalled RHP John Gant from Triple-A Memphis and gave RHP Jonathan Broxton his unconditional release. Broxton was 0-1 with a 6.89 ERA in 20 appearances this year. ... Los Angeles 3B Justin Turner (hamstring) took batting practice and ran the bases but at 70 percent, according to manager Dave Roberts. Turner's return is still at least a week away. ... Cardinals 3B Jedd Gyorko will play Thursday, but go on paternity leave Friday when the team starts a road trip at the Chicago Cubs. His wife gave birth to their third child Tuesday.
