NEW YORK -- Curtis Granderson hit a milestone homer leading off the eighth inning Wednesday night to cap a stirring comeback by the New York Mets, who went on to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-4 at Citi Field.
The 300th home run of Granderson's career capped comebacks from 2-0 and 4-1 deficits by the Mets (30-34), who won two of three from the Cubs (32-33).
The Mets had to get creative with both bullpen and bench machinations after Matt Harvey lasted just four innings and second baseman Neil Walker suffered a leg injury in the third inning. Pitcher Steven Matz delivered a pinch-hit RBI single during a two-run fourth inning for the Mets, who received five innings of five-hit relief from four pitchers.
Jerry Blevins (4-0) earned the win by striking out three in 1 1/3 perfect innings.
Lucas Duda, who entered the game after Walker got hurt, provided insurance with a three-run homer in the eighth, when T.J. Rivera (3-for-5) closed out the five-run outburst with an RBI single. Granderson scored three times for the Mets while Juan Lagares had two hits and two RBIs via a fourth-inning sacrifice fly and a game-tying run-scoring triple in the sixth.
Anthony Rizzo and Ian Happ opened the game with homers for the Cubs while Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run blast in the fourth. It was the second straight leadoff homer for Rizzo, who never batted leadoff before Tuesday.
Jon Jay had three hits for Chicago.
Carl Edwards Jr. (2-1) took the loss for the Cubs after giving up three runs in an inning-plus.
Harvey gave up four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five over four innings. Cubs left-hander Mike Montgomery allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out four over five innings.
The Cubs raced out to a 2-0 lead after just two batters thanks to Rizzo's first-pitch homer and Happ's home run six pitches later.
The Mets cut the gap in half in the second, when Kris Bryant misplayed Jose Reyes' two-out slow roller as Jay Bruce scored from third.
Harvey retired 10 of the next 11 batters following Happ's homer before giving up a single to Jon Jay and a long two-run homer to Schwarber in the fourth.
The Mets pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the inning, when they loaded the bases with one out before Matz -- pinch-hitting for Harvey -- beat out an infield single and Lagares lofted a sacrifice fly.
