NEW YORK -- Gio Gonzalez and Daniel Murphy continued their mastery of the New York Mets on Thursday night when Gonzalez tossed seven strong innings and Murphy collected three hits and two RBIs as the Washington Nationals cruised to an 8-3 victory at Citi Field.

The Nationals (40-26) won for only the second time in the last seven games to extend their National League East lead over the second-place Mets (30-35) to 9 1/2 games.

Gonzalez (6-1) allowed two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five over seven innings as he improved to 13-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 22 career starts against the Mets. He also added an RBI single Thursday.

Murphy, who played with the Mets from 2008 through 2015 before signing with the Nationals, went 3-for-5 with a two-run triple. He is batting .363 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 26 games against New York.

Bryce Harper hit a solo homer in the first for the Nationals, who scored five runs in the fifth inning on Murphy's triple, an RBI single by Anthony Rendon and a two-run homer by Michael Taylor. Brian Goodwin added an RBI double in the sixth.

Jay Bruce had an RBI double in the fourth for the Mets while Rene Rivera (fifth inning) and Wilmer Flores (eighth inning) added solo homers.

Right-hander Robert Gsellman (5-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits and two walks and three strikeouts over five innings.

NOTES: The Mets placed 2B Neil Walker (torn left hamstring) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled INF Gavin Cecchini from Triple-A Las Vegas. Walker, who was injured trying to beat out a bunt Wednesday, is expected to miss several weeks. ... The Mets announced RHP Matt Harvey suffered a stress injury to the scapula bone in his right shoulder. He'll be placed on the disabled list Friday and is expected to also miss several weeks. ... The Nationals recalled LHP Matt Grace from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned RHP Trevor Gott to the same affiliate. ... Nationals manager Dusty Baker turned 68 on Thursday. He is 8-12 as a manager on his birthday.
