ST. LOUIS -- Jedd Gyorko's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium.
Harrison Bader started the winning rally with his first big league hit, a double to left off Jake McGee (0-1). After Greg Garcia bunted Bader to third, Gyorko pinch-hit and lofted a fly ball to shallow right.
Carlos Gonzalez made the catch and unloosed an accurate throw home, but catcher Ryan Hanigan couldn't handle the short hop as Bader slid home with the winning run.
Trevor Rosenthal (3-4) hurled two scoreless innings in relief for the victory. He slipped a called third strike past Trevor Story with two outs in the ninth after allowing singles to Mark Reynolds and Carlos Gonzalez to keep the game even.
Story tied the score in the eighth with his 14th homer, golfing a low sinker from Matt Bowman over the left-center field wall.
Neither starter was involved in the decision. Colorado's Jon Gray lasted five innings, allowing eight hits and two runs with no walks and six strikeouts.
St. Louis' Lance Lynn worked six-plus innings, permitting three hits and a run. He walked two and fanned six.
The Cardinals improved to 49-51 and stayed four games behind first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central. The Rockies (58-44) fell into the NL's second wild-card spot.
As it did Monday night in an 8-2 win, St. Louis struck for two runs in the first inning. Paul DeJong hit a first-pitch fastball from Jon Gray 408 feet into the seats in left-center with Matt Carpenter aboard for his 13th homer in 48 big-league games.
Pitching dominated the remainder of the first five innings. Gray worked out of trouble in the second and fourth innings. He fanned Carpenter to strand Garcia at second base in the second, then struck out the side in the fourth to erase singles by Yadier Molina and Kolten Wong.
Colorado couldn't crack the code against Lynn, who faced one batter over the minimum through five innings. Its only hit in that time was Gerardo Parra's leadoff double to right center in the second.
