ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus homered twice and drove in three runs as the Rangers moved back to the .500 mark by hanging on for a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
The Rangers took two of three from the Angels and have won 10 of 16 meetings against the Angels this season.
Andrus hit a solo homer in the third to tie the game at 2. He then added some much-needed insurance to a 5-3 Texas lead with a two-run homer to left in the sixth inning. It was the second two-homer game for Andrus this season. He's the first Texas shortstop to have multiple-homer games in the same season since Alex Rodriguez in 2003.
Andrus' exploits helped Martin Perez (11-10) win his sixth-straight start. Perez, who threw a career high 117 pitches, allowed three runs on nine hits in six innings.
The Rangers needed all the offense as the Angels made it interesting in the ninth. Andrelton Simmons doubled off Barnette to cut the lead to two and put runners on second and third. But Barnette struck out C.J. Cron for the second out. He then intentionally walked Kole Calhoun before walking Kaleb Cowart to force in another run. Barnette got a fielder's choice grounder from Luis Valbuena to end the game for his second save.
The Angels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run double by Cron. The Rangers got their first run off Andrew Heaney (1-1) on an RBI single from Will Middlebrooks in the second.
Texas took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. Robinson Chirinos clubbed a two-run homer and Delino DeShields made it back-to-back blasts with a solo homer to left to put Texas up 5-2. That also ended the day for Heaney, who was charged with five runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings. He also walked four.
An Albert Pujols single in the fifth trimmed the Texas lead to 5-3.
Chirinos, Andrus, DeShields and Joey Gallo each had two hits for Texas, which finished with 10. Calhoun, Brandon Phillips, Mike Trout, Simmons and Justin Upton each had two hits for the Angels.
