NEW YORK -- Tucker Barnhart hit a tie-breaking two-run double in the eighth inning Sunday afternoon and added a three-run homer in the ninth as the Cincinnati Reds stormed back to beat the New York Mets 10-5 at Citi Field.
The Reds (62-82) scored eight unanswered runs in the final three innings to avoid being swept in the four-game series. The Mets (63-80) fell to 13-31 in series finales this season.
The Mets snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth when Dominic Smith hit a leadoff homer and Jose Reyes delivered a two-run, two-out double. But Reyes helped extend the top of the seventh when he threw wide of first base on a potential inning-ending double play and Zack Cozart followed with a three-run homer.
In the eighth, Eugenio Suarez drew a leadoff walk against Jeurys Familia (1-2) and went to second on a bunt by Philip Ervin. After Scott Schebler was intentionally walked, Barnhart doubled to left. Suarez scored easily and Schebler ran through the stop sign of third base coach Billy Hatcher and was originally ruled out before the call was overturned on review.
Barnhart's homer deep into the second deck in right field an inning later gave him a career-high five RBIs.
The tie-breaking rally in the eighth made a winner out of Jackson Stephens (2-0), who tossed 1 1/3 hitless innings. Raisel Iglesias earned his 26th save with two innings of two-hit ball.
The Reds took a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to Cozart's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Adam Duvall.
Travis d'Arnaud had an RBI groundout in the first and Smith laced an RBI single in the third for the Mets.
Reds right-hander Sal Romano, who grew up about two hours away in Southington, CT, allowed two runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six over five innings.
Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out 10 over six innings. DeGrom, who was in line for the win after New York went ahead in the seventh, earned a decision in his previous 20 starts.
