MILWAUKEE -- Chase Anderson gave up a pair of home runs but struck out six over six innings and the Milwaukee Brewers received homers from Domingo Santana and Jonathan Villar in a 6-5 victory over the St Louis Cardinals Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park.
Making his third start since a seven-week stint on the disabled list for a strained oblique, Anderson (8-3) held St. Louis to two hits and a pair of walks.
Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez (10-10) worked into the sixth but was tagged for six runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits while striking out seven. He fell to 0-3 with a 6.37 ERA in three starts at Milwaukee this season.
A leadoff walk to Matt Carpenter came back to haunt Anderson as Tommy Pham followed with a two-run homer to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
Milwaukee came back with three in the second -- aided by an error by Martinez on what would have been an inning-ending double play. Anderson retired 14 in a row before Randal Grichuk tied it up at 3 with a solo homer in the fifth.
Santana opened the Brewers' sixth with a solo shot to right, putting Milwaukee back in font.
An error on Carpenter allowed Stephen Vogt to reach, and Villar followed by sending a 2-1 fastball to left for his 10th home run of the year, giving the Brewers a 6-3 lead.
Martinez recovered by retiring Hernan Perez and Orlando Arcia on fly balls to right but was pulled after Eric Sogard extended the inning with an infield hit.
Pham's second home run of the game came off Anthony Swarzak in the eighth and got the Cardinals within a run.
Swarzak got out of the inning without further damage, and Keon Broxton reached over the wall to pull back what would have been a go-ahead homer for Grichuk in the ninth to lock down Corey Knebel's 30th save.
NOTES: St. Louis cut a deal before the game, shipping RHP Mike Leake to Seattle in exchange for minor league SS Rayder Ascanio, $750,000 of international cap space and other cash considerations. Leake went 7-12 with a 4.21 ERA this season but was 1-5 with a 6.90 ERA over his last nine starts. He is under contract through 2020 with an option for 2021. ... C Yadier Molina was back in the St. Louis lineup Wednesday. He was scratched prior to the game Tuesday because of soreness in his lower right abdomen. ... Milwaukee was without C Manny Pina (sore hip) and 3B Travis Shaw (bruised foot) Wednesday. Both are considered-day-to-day, according to manager Craig Counsell. ... The Cardinals and Brewers will play one more series this 2017, meeting in St. Louis on the final weekend of the season.
