Aaron Nola pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, Rhys Hoskins homered and the Philadelphia Phillies opened a four-game series with the Washington Nationals with a 4-3 victory Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Nola (10-2) allowed five hits and one run while striking out eight in an impressive 114-pitch performance.
Rhys Hoskins had three hits while Maikel Franco and Jorge Alfaro each added two hits for the Phillies.
Tanner Roark (3-9) tossed six solid innings for the Nationals, giving up seven hits and two runs, one of which was earned. Roark threw 107 pitches, 62 for strikes.
Trea Turner had a pair of hits for the Nationals.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Pedro Severino doubled and drove in Turner.
The Phillies tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Alfaro singled to center and Franco scored following an error by Michael Taylor.
Scott Kingery's sacrifice fly to center in the third scored Odubel Herrera and gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead.
The Nationals opened the sixth with runners on first and second and no outs after back-to-back singles by Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon. But Nola forced Juan Soto into a foul pop-up to Franco at third base. Daniel Murphy then lined out to Nick Williams in right and Bryce Harper was able to tag up and reach third. Turner then struck out swinging to end the scoring threat.
The Phillies extended their lead to 4-1 in the seventh when Hoskins ripped a two-run home run to left off Washington reliever Ryan Madson. It was Hoskins' 13th homer of the season.
Philadelphia reliever Adam Morgan threw one pitch in relief of Nola in the eighth and forced Murphy into a weak popout to second base with two runners aboard.
In the ninth, Phillies reliever Tommy Hunter allowed two straight hits, including an RBI double by Taylor. Seranthony Dominguez entered the game and uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Taylor to score, slicing the lead to 4-3 with two outs. But Dominguez struck out Wilmer Difo to earn his sixth save.
