Mitch Haniger hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning as the Seattle Mariners rallied to defeat the host Boston Red Sox 7-3 Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.
The Mariners managed just three hits -- the others were doubles by Ty France and Sam Haggerty -- but got the most out of them despite only one hit through the first nine innings.
Mariners right-hander Rafael Montero (2-0) earned the victory after retiring the side in order in the ninth.
Red Sox left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez (0-1) took over in the 10th with Seattle's Evan White standing at second base. Taylor Trammell bunted White to third and Haggerty lined a double down the left-field line, just over the glove of leaping outfielder Franchy Cordero. J.P. Crawford walked with two outs and Haniger homered to right-center field.
The Mariners tied the score at 3-3 in the eighth against reliever Adam Ottavino. Luis Torrens led off with a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Haggerty, who proceeded to steal second. Pinch hitter Jose Marmolejos walked, putting runners at first and second. Crawford laid down a bunt in front of the plate that Ottavino fielded and attempted to throw out the lead runner at third. Instead, his throw sailed down the left-field line, allowing the tying run to score.
The Red Sox had taken a 3-2 lead off reliever Casey Sadler in the seventh as Enrique Hernandez led off with a triple off the Green Monster in left-center field and scored an out later on a wild pitch.
Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. With two outs, Pivetta walked Crawford and Haniger before France hit a liner over the head of leaping Cordero in left center for a two-run double, tying the score at 2-2.
Pivetta went six innings, allowing the two runs on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts.
Mariners starter Justin Dunn pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Boston's Rafael Devers led off the bottom of the second with a homer deep over the fence in right-center field.
Devers helped make it 2-0 in the fourth, leading off with a single to right and stealing second. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Hunter Renfroe's single to right.
