Before Gardner's homer in the fifth, Allen scored on a throwing error by Philadelphia shortstop Didi Gregorius, who tried to get a double play after catching a liner by Tyler Wade.
Rhys Hoskins homered and Ronald Torreyes hit an RBI double for the Phillies, who lost for only the fifth time in their past 15 games. Jean Segura added an RBI single in the eighth off Zack Britton.
New York's Domingo German allowed two runs and three hits in four innings while making his first start since June 30. He walked three and struck out five. Luis Cessa (3-1) and was awarded the win after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Nola returned from the COVID-19 list and allowed four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings in his first outing since July 6. He struck out five and walked one.
