Rookie DJ Peters hit a pair of two-run homers to help the Texas Rangers take two of three from the visiting Oakland Athletics with Sunday's 7-4 victory at Arlington, Texas.
Peters doubled his career home run total by going deep during the first and fifth innings in the rubber game of this set for the Rangers, who won their first series since taking two of three against Seattle from July 30-Aug. 1. Texas' Kolby Allard (3-10) allowed three runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings to post his first victory since June 12.
Matt Chapman homered for one of his three hits and Mark Canha also left the yard for the A's, who entered this series on a seven-game winning streak. Five of the seven runs yielded by Oakland's Sean Manaea (8-8) in his five innings came on three homers.
After allowing three runs in a season-low 1 2/3 innings during his previous outing at Cleveland earlier in the week, Manaea yielded as many in the first on Sunday. He walked Yonny Hernandez (two hits) to open the frame, then allowed a double to Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Both came home on Peters' blast into the second deck in left-center field.
The A's got a run back in the second when Chapman homered for the third time in two games to make it 3-1. However, the Rangers regained that three-run edge in the bottom of the inning with Hernandez's two-out, RBI double. In the third inning, Texas went up 5-1 on Adolis Garcia's 26th homer of the season into the left-field seats off Manaea.
Peters' second two-run shot gave Texas a six-run cushion in the fifth. But Canha's solo homer in the sixth made it a 7-2 game. Oakland got an RBI single from Tony Kemp in the seventh and a run-scoring double from Sean Murphy in the eighth.
Texas' Joe Barlow allowed a pair of runners in the ninth, but picked up his second career save in as many chances.
