San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks Match Player Stats On Aug 30, 2021

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Eric Hosmer both slugged long homers to help the San Diego Padres notch a 7-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night in Phoenix.

The Padres racked up eight hits in five innings against Arizona left-hander Tyler Gilbert, who threw a no-hitter against San Diego on Aug. 14 in his first career start.

This time, the no-hitter was over before the first inning ended due to Tatis' two-run homer as the Padres won for just the fourth time in the past 17 games.

San Diego trails the Cincinnati Reds by a half-game in the battle for the National League's second wild-card spot.

Ketel Marte hit a grand slam for Arizona, which has dropped four straight games and eight of its past 11.

Craig Stammen (6-3) recorded three outs in the middle innings to get the victory. Mark Melancon worked the ninth for his 35th save.

Gilbert (1-2) allowed five runs (three earned), struck out four and walked one.

San Diego right-hander Chris Paddack (oblique) was activated off the injured list Monday and worked 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five and allowed one run and three hits without issuing a walk.

Gilbert should have escaped the first inning unscathed, but an error by second baseman Josh Rojas on a pickoff play kept the inning alive.

Tatis hit the next pitch 444 feet over the fence in left-center, increasing his NL-leading total to 36 homers. He went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

In the second inning, Wil Myers led off with a double and scored on Austin Nola's one-out single. Arizona was then unable to make the play on consecutive bunts, with the second one by Trent Grisham scoring Nola to make it 4-0.

Adam Frazier's two-out RBI single in the third gave San Diego a five-run lead.

Arizona struck in the bottom of the fifth. Daulton Varsho and Nick Ahmed hit back-to-back two-out singles to put runners on the corners and end Paddack's night. Stammen entered and uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Varsho to score.

Hosmer smoked a 453-foot blast to straightaway center in the seventh off Matt Peacock to make it 6-1. It was his 11th homer of the campaign.

The Diamondbacks loaded the bases with two out against Daniel Hudson in the bottom of the seventh. Emilio Pagan entered and Marte drilled a liner over the fence in right for his ninth homer of the season and third career grand slam.

Manny Machado and Tatis drilled back-to-back one-out doubles to center in the ninth to give San Diego an insurance run.
