Matt Manning collected his first victory in over a month, Dustin Garneau hit a solo home run and drove in two runs, and the host Detroit Tigers topped the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 on Wednesday.
Manning (4-6), a rookie making his 15th start, allowed one run on two hits with three walks and a career-high six strikeouts. His last victory came on Aug. 12. Michael Fulmer struck out four in the last two innings while posting his ninth save.
Derek Hill ripped an RBI triple and Miguel Cabrera contributed a run-scoring double for Detroit (70-76), which won for the fifth time in six games.
Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff (9-9) gave up three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. Milwaukee (89-55), whose magic number to clinch the National League Central remained at five, has lost two straight following a five-game winning streak.
Lorenzo Cain's double accounted for the Brewers' only run, coming with two outs in the second. Jace Peterson singled and stole second and Daniel Vogelbach walked before Cain ripped a double just inside first base.
A walk to Manny Pina loaded the bases, but Manning prevented further damage by retiring Kolten Wong on a groundout.
Woodruff set down the first 11 batters he faced. Detroit then scored a two-out run to tie it in the fourth. Robbie Grossman drew a walk and scored on Cabrera's double to left.
The Tigers took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Harold Castro hit a bloop single and Willi Castro had an infield hit. A throwing error by second baseman Wong allowed Harold Castro to reach third. Garneau's sacrifice fly drove in Harold Castro and Hill's triple to center knocked in Willi Castro.
Hill was left stranded when Akil Baddoo struck out for the third time and Jonathan Schoop grounded out.
Garneau, the catcher, made a diving catch of Peterson's foul tip on Manning's final batter in the sixth.
In the seventh, he made it a 4-1 game by hitting his fourth homer of the season. The two-out blast came off Jake Cousins and landed over the left-field wall.
