Zack Short blasted his first career home run, Casey Mize tossed six strong innings and the host Detroit Tigers snapped the Houston Astros' 11-game winning streak Saturday with a 3-1 triumph in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.
Houston's winning streak was one shy of the franchise record, which it established on three occasions.
Short was called up from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day to serve as the 27th man on the roster for the doubleheader. In addition to his fifth-inning home run, the 26-year-old shortstop had a double. Miguel Cabrera added two hits for the Tigers.
The teams were rained out Friday, necessitating Saturday's doubleheader.
Mize (5-4), who recorded his first career win against Houston in April, has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 11 consecutive starts. He gave up one run on six hits Saturday while striking out five in six innings.
Jose Cisnero recorded his third save by recording the last three outs in the seven-inning game, including two strikeouts.
Yuli Gurriel had two hits and scored the Astros' run. Framber Valdez (4-1) pitched all six innings for the Astros, giving up three runs on six hits and struck out six.
Mize wiggled out of a jam in the first. Jose Altuve and Michael Brantley smacked singles to put runners on the corners. Mize promptly struck out Gurriel and Yordan Alvarez and retired Carlos Correa on a slow bouncer near the mound.
Detroit pushed across a run in the second. Cabrera led off with a single and Daz Cameron hit into a fielder's choice. Cameron advanced to third on Eric Haase's single and scored on Isaac Paredes' sacrifice fly.
The Astros tied it with a two-out run in the third. Gurriel singled and Alvarez walked before Correa ripped a single to left to drive in Gurriel. Mize averted further damage by retiring Kyle Tucker on a groundout.
Paredes led off the fifth inning with an infield single. Jake Rogers sacrificed him to second and Short then deposited a Valdez changeup over the right-field wall.
