Chris Davis hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning, and Tim Beckham added a two-run shot in eighth as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the visiting New York Mets 6-3 on Tuesday night in the opener of a two-game series.
The game was deadlocked at 2 before Davis came up against Bobby Wahl (0-1) with one out in the seventh. Davis belted his 15th homer to deep center for a 3-2 lead.
Later in the inning, with runners at first and second, Renato Nunez hit a hard grounder that third baseman Todd Frazier deflected into short left field. That single, against Paul Sewald, brought in Caleb Joseph from second and made it 4-2.
Beckham added his two-run homer in the eighth, also off Sewald. Adam Jones had homered in the sixth for the Orioles.
Mychal Givens came on in the ninth and earned his fourth save by retiring the last three batters after the Mets scored once earlier in the inning against Miguel Castro.
Baltimore starter Andrew Cashner (4-10) got the victory thanks to seven strong innings. He allowed two runs on five hits as the Orioles ended a five-game losing streak.
New York starter Jason Vargas, who was 0-5 in his previous six starts, gave up two runs on five hits in six innings. He wound up with a no-decision.
The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Mark Trumbo sacrifice fly. Nunez started things with a one-out walk and went to third on a Jones double before Trumbo drove him in.
The Mets took the lead with two in the top of the fifth. Cashner walked two Mets -- Brandon Nimmo and Jose Bautista -- at different parts of the inning, and each came in to score thanks to RBI singles from Kevin Plawecki and Amed Rosario.
Jones then tied it with his solo homer in the sixth before the Orioles scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth.
Jones will go on to the bereavement list after the New York series ends Wednesday, and he could miss the whole series in Cleveland this weekend.
