Shane Bieber pitched six scoreless innings as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-2 on Tuesday night.
Bo Naylor hit a two-run homer for the Guardians, who evened the three-game series at one victory apiece.
Bieber (2-0) hasn't allowed a run over 12 innings this season after also going six scoreless in an 8-0 decision on Opening Day in Oakland. The right-hander gave up six hits to Seattle, didn't walk a batter and fanned nine.
Emmanuel Clase worked the ninth for his second save of the season.
Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo (0-2) took the loss. He allowed four runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Castillo cruised through the first three innings, allowing two hits and striking out six, before running into trouble in the fourth.
Jose Ramirez led off with an infield single and, with two outs, Will Brennan grounded a single to right that got under the glove of outfielder Mitch Haniger, allowing Ramirez to score from first. Naylor pulled a 1-0 fastball on the inside corner over the right-field wall to give the Guardians a 3-0 lead.
Cleveland tacked on another run in the fifth, though it could have easily been more.
Brayan Rocchio led off with a double into the left-field corner. Steven Kwan put down a sacrifice bunt, with third baseman Josh Rojas' throwing error bringing home Rocchio.
Andres Gimenez doubled to right, putting runners at second and third with no outs. After Ramirez grounded out to first, the Mariners intentionally walked Josh Naylor to load the bases. Castillo got Tyler Freeman to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the score at 4-0.
Cleveland extended its lead off the Mariners' bullpen in the seventh. With one out, Ramirez reached on an infield single off Tayler Saucedo. Josh Naylor grounded a single to right, sending Ramirez to third. Reliever Cody Bolton was greeted by Freeman's sacrifice fly to deep right to make it 5-0.
The Mariners got on the board in the bottom of the inning against Cleveland reliever Eli Morgan. Cal Raleigh led off by grounding a single to center and Ty France walked. Rojas hit a one-out double down the left-field line, scoring Raleigh.
Scott Barlow replaced Morgan and got J.P. Crawford to ground out to short to bring home a second run before Julio Rodriguez flew out to left to end the inning.
