DJ LeMahieu's two-out RBI single in the ninth inning capped the New York Yankees' rally from a five-run deficit for a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night in Anaheim, Calif.
The Yankees trailed 5-0 after five innings, but scored twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh to tie the game.
In the ninth, Tyler Wade singled with two outs and stole second. LeMahieu's line drive to right field off Angels reliever Ty Buttrey (1-1) drove in the winning run, helping the Yankees to their sixth win in a row and eighth in nine games.
The Angels had built their lead on two solo homers by Andrelton Simmons and a three-run homer by Kole Calhoun, all coming off Yankees starter CC Sabathia. But the Yankees bullpen shut down the Angels from there.
Jonathan Loaisiga (1-0) threw three scoreless innings to get the win and Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
Simmons hit his first home run of the night with two out in the first inning, then led off the fourth inning with his second homer for a 2-0 Angels lead. Simmons had one multi-homer game last season, and it also came on April 24.
The Angels continued their rally against Sabathia in the fourth. A single by Albert Pujols and an error by Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez gave the Angels a couple of baserunners before Calhoun unloaded on a breaking pitch from Sabathia for a three-run homer and a 5-0 Angels lead.
The Angels "opener" on the mound was reliever Cam Bedrosian, who threw a scoreless first inning. Felix Pena entered the game in the second and kept the Yankees off the scoreboard until the sixth, when LeMahieu doubled home New York's first run of the night.
The Yankees added a second run in the inning on a passed ball by Angels catcher Jonathan Lucroy.
The Yankees got even in the seventh inning with three runs, tying the game at 5-5, and they might have had more if not for a great catch by Mike Trout in center field and a heads-up play by Simmons at shortstop.
With runners on first and second and one out, Brett Gardner hit a drive to deep center, where Trout made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch. Both baserunners retreated safely back to their respective base, but Wade inadvertently stepped off second base just as Simmons placed a tag on him.
After a replay review, Wade was called out and the inning was over.
