Jason Kipnis belted a go-ahead RBI triple in the eighth inning as the host Cleveland Indians rallied to a 7-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
With the game tied at 5, Jose Ramirez reached on an infield single against Joe Jimenez (2-5) to lead off the eighth inning before Kipnis launched a ball that hit the yellow line on top of the wall in center field before caroming back into play. The sequence was challenged -- umpires ruled it was not a home run -- with Ramirez allowed to score as he was running on the play and Kipnis awarded third base.
Kipnis scored on Jake Bauers' sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 7-5 for the Indians, who have won 11 of their past 16 games overall and six of seven against Detroit this season.
Adam Cimber (3-2) picked up the win after retiring the lone two batters he faced to finish the eighth inning.
JaCoby Jones greeted closer Brad Hand with a double to open the ninth inning, and Christin Stewart followed with an RBI single in the ninth for the Tigers. Tyler Naquin made a diving catch of a Nicholas Castellanos line drive, then threw to first base to double up Stewart. Hand got Miguel Cabrera to pop up to end the game and earn his 21st save.
Brandon Dixon and Stewart homered, and Castellanos, Gordon Beckham and Niko Goodrum each ripped an RBI double for the Tigers, who have been singed for 51 runs during a 1-6 stretch.
Detroit scored five straight runs to seize a 5-2 lead before Cleveland began to chip away, beginning with Naquin leading off the fifth by sending a first-pitch fastball from Matthew Boyd over the wall in right field.
Jordan Luplow followed suit with a 1-0 changeup from Boyd to lead off the sixth before Roberto Perez's RBI single scored Ramirez to forge a tie at 5 later in the inning.
After Carlos Santana's team-leading 16th homer and second in as many days staked Cleveland to an early 2-0 lead, Dixon halved the deficit in the second inning with his ninth of the season.
Castellanos drove in Jones with a double to left field to even the score at 2 in the third inning before Beckham ripped an RBI double into the right-field corner to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer became undone in the fifth, as he surrendered four straight hits to start the inning before departing. Stewart began the onslaught by launching a 2-2 fastball over the wall in center field for his sixth homer and first since June 8.
