Adrian Sampson allowed just one run in seven innings as the Texas Rangers held on to win the rubber game of their three-game series, 7-4 over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday in Arlington, Texas.
Sampson (6-4) scattered seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts in winning for the sixth time in his past seven decisions. The Rangers turned three double plays.
Tim Federowicz and Danny Santana both hit homers in the Rangers' four-run second inning against White Sox starter Ivan Nova (3-6), who allowed another run in the fifth. In six innings, he gave up eight hits and a walk, striking out six. Only three of the five runs were earned.
The Rangers won for the third time in four games. The White Sox have lost three of four and five of seven.
Rougned Odor led off the bottom of the second with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ronald Guzman. Federowicz then hit Nova's next pitch, a 90-mph fastball, for a home run to left-center for a 2-0 lead.
Shin-Soo Choo hit a grounder that looked like the third out, but he reached on first baseman Yonder Alonso's error. Santana made the error hurt when he crushed Nova's next pitch, another 90-mph fastball, for a two-run bomb to center field. It was Santana's eighth home run of the season and his fourth in his last six games.
Nomar Mazara, who was 4-for-8 with three home runs in the first two games of the series, hit a double to lead off the Rangers' third and eventually scored on Delino DeShields' two-out single.
After the White Sox cut the deficit to one run in the top of the eighth, Mazara doubled in a run in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 6-4. DeShields' third hit of the game, a single to right, scored Mazara to make it 7-4.
The White Sox broke through against Sampson in the fifth inning with three straight singles, the last by Tim Anderson to plate Eloy Jimenez.
In the eighth, the White Sox jumped on the Rangers' bullpen, and also capitalized on a big Texas error.
Rookie right-hander Peter Fairbanks lasted just one-third of an inning, allowing two hits and two walks, including one to James McCann that forced in a run. Fairbanks was charged with three runs.
Another rookie, left-hander Brett Martin, replaced Fairbanks and gave up a screaming line drive by Jimenez to center field that hit off DeShields' glove for an error. Two runs scored to trim Chicago's deficit to 5-4 with runners at second and third, but Rangers' right-hander Shawn Kelley came on to strike out Anderson.
Kelley worked a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save in 14 chances.
Mazara and Elvis Andrus each had two of the Rangers' 11 hits, while McCann had two of Chicago's 10hits.
