Carlos Santana drove in two runs with a pair of two-out singles, and Shane Bieber continued to mystify Baltimore, throwing eight shutout innings as the visiting Cleveland Indians defeated the Orioles 2-0 Sunday in the finale of a three-game series.
The Orioles were trying for their first sweep of a series this season after routing Cleveland 13-0 in each of the first two games. But even though Baltimore starter Gabriel Ynoa and the bullpen pitched effectively, the Indians still pulled it out.
Nevertheless, this was just the first time since late April that the struggling Orioles won a series.
For the Indians, Santana got RBI singles in the third and the seventh innings. That gave Cleveland the only two runs it would score in the series and stopped Baltimore's hopes of a sweep.
Bieber (7-3) gave up three hits and fanned 11 in his eight innings of work.
He turned in a similar effort on May 19 in Cleveland. In that game, Bieber struck out 15 and gave up five hits and went the distance in a 10-0 victory.
The right-hander now has struck out 26 without a walk or a run allowed in 17 innings against Baltimore this season.
Brad Hand came on in the ninth inning to closed the game for Cleveland, earning his 23rd save despite needing to escape a bases-loaded jam with two outs.
Ynoa (0-6) allowed one run on six hits in 5 ? innings. The only inning in which he allowed a run was the third, when Oscar Mercado doubled with two outs before Santana followed with an RBI single that gave Cleveland its first run of the series -- the Indians were scoreless in the first 20 frames -- and a 1-0 lead.
Cleveland stretched the lead to 2-0 on a similar scenario in the seventh against Shawn Armstrong. Mercado once again doubled with two outs and moved to third on a wild pitch before Santana singled him in.
The Orioles could not do much on offense against Bieber or Hand. Their best threat came in the ninth with that two-out bases-loaded threat but Hand struck out Anthony Santander to end the game.
