Although weather could wreak havoc on the schedule today, there are plenty of safe games we can target when looking for MLB player props

I’ve found a few spots that I like across the country, headlined by Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom.

Here are my top MLB picks for Saturday, April 5.

Best MLB player props today

MLB props for April 5

Jacob deGrom Over 7.5 strikeouts (+130 at DraftKings)

Jacob deGrom may have trouble staying healthy, but he remains one of the best starting pitchers we’ve ever seen on an inning-for-inning basis. The Texas Rangers right-hander showed that against in his first start of the 2025 season, when he allowed just two hits over five shutout innings against the Boston Red Sox.

Tonight, deGrom takes the hill against the Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa hasn’t been scoring much in the early season, averaging just 3.86 runs per game while striking out 7.43 times per contest.

DeGrom doesn’t strike out as many batters as he did during the peak of his career with the Mets, but he has still kept his average extremely high, generating 13.4 whiffs per nine innings in limited action in 2023. I expect the Rangers to let deGrom go beyond the 73 pitches he tossed against the Red Sox, allowing him to pad his strikeout numbers tonight.

Lawrence Butler Over 0.5 runs (-120 at bet365)

Lawrence Butler quietly enjoyed a solid first full season in the majors for the Athletics in 2024, boasting 63 runs in 125 games for a team that averaged less than four runs per game. He’s already scored four times in eight games and now faces a favorable matchup against the Colorado Rockies.

Butler gets a chance to face off against the right-handed German Marquez, who has only been able to throw 30 innings at the MLB level in the past three seasons. Marquez has a career ERA of 4.39, and while Butler doesn’t have much of a platoon split, he does get on base a bit more against right-handed pitching.

The A’s should be able to hit behind Butler and get their leadoff man home at Coors Field.

Mitchell Parker Under 16.5 outs (-115 at bet365)

Washington Nationals southpaw Mitchell Parker was solid enough in his first major league season, going 7-10 with a 4.29 ERA in his 2024 campaign. But like many young pitchers today, Parker didn’t show a tendency to go deep in games, averaging 5.2 innings per start.

Parker’s length will be tested today against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have looked like one of the best offensive squads in the league so far. The Diamondbacks are averaging 6.38 runs per game over their first eight contests, and that’s coming off a 2024 campaign in which Arizona led the majors in scoring (5.47 runs per game).

That’s likely going to mean some long at-bats and pressure innings for Parker, further shortening his outing. Along with the chance of late rain, there are too many factors working against him tonight.

Since joining Covers in 2022, Ed has offered his sports betting analysis primarily on MLB, NFL, college football, and college basketball games, but is willing to take on any sport.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
