Right-hander Joe Musgrove pitched six strong innings and doubled and scored on a slide into home Saturday to help the Pittsburgh Pirates even their series with the visiting Philadelphia Phillies with a 5-1 win.
Musgrove (7-8) moved up a day and started in place of Trevor Williams, who was scratched because of illness. Musgrove gave up one unearned run and two hits, matched his season high with eight strikeouts, walked two and returned to the game after a half-hour rain delay during the fourth inning.
Starling Marte was 3 for 5 with an RBI double and two runs scored, Colin Moran had an RBI double, and Bryan Reynolds and Josh Bell each had an RBI single for Pittsburgh, which had been 1-6 coming out of the All-Star break.
Philadelphia, held to three hits, had won three of its previous four games.
Philadelphia starter Zach Eflin (7-10) pitched four innings, giving up three runs and five hits, with three strikeouts and no walks.
In the third, Musgrove doubled to left with one out. An out later, Musgrove slid to beat a throw home on Reynolds' single to right for a 1-0 Pittsburgh lead. Marte followed with an RBI double, and Bell an RBI bloop single to increase it to 3-0.
The Phillies cut it to 3-1 in the fifth. Brad Miller led off with a walk. Miller reached third and Cesar Hernandez advanced to second on Hernandez's fielder's choice and Bell's fielding error at first. Miller scored on Adam Haseley's groundout.
Against Nick Pivetta, making his second career relief appearance after being moved to the Philadelphia bullpen this weekend, Pittsburgh added a run in the sixth. Corey Dickerson led off with his second double of the game and was safe at third on Kevin Newman's fielder's choice. Pinch-hitter Melky Cabrera grounded into a double play, scoring Dickerson to make it 4-1.
In the seventh, the Pirates increased the lead to 5-1. Marte doubled to left-center with one out and moved to third on Bell's flyout. Moran followed with a double to right-center to drive in Marte.
